9. Oh, so close, Hillary.
But I'm afraid you didn't win our grand POTUS prize.

BUT don't despair! We have some lovely parting gifts for you... First, the office of Secretary of State!! - at a reduced salary from your current position, ofcourse. The prize also comes with bonus restrictions on your husband's income from foreign governments!

This glamorous position allows for frequent travel to exotic conflicts and war zones. Who knows, you may ACTUALLY get to fulfill your fantasy of landing under sniper fire somewhere! And we can't WAIT to hear the stories!

The best part is you get the privilage, honor, and duty of taking direct orders from the very man who squashed your presidential hopes and dreams!

But wait... THERE'S MORE! You also get the chance to live out your fantasy at Barack's "The Office of the President Elect" podium! The prize comes complete with a photo shoot so you can cherish the memory forever and whimsically wonder what might have been.

Thanks for playing!

(Sorry. I've forced myself to remain silent on her appointment for days now. Had to get it out of my system.)

10. Well, Hillary could have remained in the senate.
She did have a choice and she chose to be a part in his administration. Personally, I didn't want her anywhere near his cabinet as she would be losing her independence and power base.

Besides, that lectern may be prophetic. In politics, as in life, never say never.

11. I don't know...
When was Hillary due to run again for NY Senator?

I wonder what with the debt she still has on her presidential campaign, would she have had the funds to run for senator again?

Don't cost nothin to be appointed to SOS - possibly for 8 years if she's any good (smaller salary, but speeches galore, government contracts, etc. would follow).

16. I don't know about that. People expected her to coast in her first election.
And she ended up spending $36 million on that effort.

People expected her to coast to the Democratic nomination. That didn't work out so well either.

17. Not at all the same thing.
She didn't improve her re-election polling very much with her huge spending in 2006. If you look at the polls she always had a huge lead and won huge. Typically incumbent Senators win handily. She would be no exception in 2012.

But, I find it amusing when people criticize Hillary for the same things that Obama did to get elected. All candidates have to spend money to win elections and NY is the most expensive state to win a senate seat.

Forgot to add, I'm no PUMA. If I were, I wouldn't even bother posting here. What for? There are quite a few PUMA like sites and I never joined any of them.

39. It depends.
Am I happy he won the nomination? A resounding NO.

Am I glad he won against McCain? Of course, ANY Democrat would have been better than a Republican. Furthermore, after 8 years of Bush, McCain's choice of VP and the economy imploding in September, a Republican had no chance in hell of winning this year.

I'm also hoping for the sake of the nation that he has a successful administration.

Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 03:54 PM by Lucky 13
I was responding to the poster who said that she would not have to raise any money to win re-election. That's simply not true. Obama is a perfect example of that. In any campaign you spend money. Some more than others.

This isn't about comparing Hillary and Barack AT ALL. I wasn't attacking her, just saying she (like everyone) needs to raise money for any campaign.

Sheesh.

26. Of course she would, she had millions that could not be used during the primaries.
The money was assigned for the GE, but if donors gave written authorization (they sent out a form), that money could be used for her senate reelection. Besides, she has years to raise more money, she's not up for reelection until 2012.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 05:06 PM by Hope2006
although, I wouldn't phrase it quite like "I didn't want her anywhere near his cabinet", I think she was doing a fairly decent job in the Senate.

My take on her yesterday is that she seemed subdued and a little saddened. I wondered if the moment for her was bittersweet. While I did not approve of some of the tactics she employed during her campaign, I have to admit that my heart went out to her yesterday. She is a strong, intelligent, and gutsy woman, and, I hope that this was the best decision for her.

Hillary does love to be a senator and was not expecting to be offered the SOS position. It must have been a pretty tough decision to make. I just hope that she made the right decision.

15. I honestly don't understand why she wanted it either.
For all the reasons you stated. (Imagine that! Me agreeing with Beacool!)

But hey. He picked her, she accepted, and what's done is done. I wish them both the best of luck.

It's funny. I used to love the Clintons. I defended them to my rightwing nutjob family to no end and to my own detriment during their administration and after. During the primary, I started off as an Edwards supporter. When he left, I was really on the fence, leaning Hillary. But HONESTLY, some of the things she (and Bill) said and did really turned me off and soured me on them for good. It left me really disillusioned.

So no, I am not happy about her SoS appointment. And the cynic in me says that she's going to give Obama trouble and act in her OWN interests. But I'm trying to set aside my dislike and distrust of her, think positively and give her a chance. There is some part of me that wants her to do a bang-up job, act honorably, and make me remember when I liked the Clintons. I'm not there yet, but I'm open to that possibility.

The lectern MIGHT be prophetic... or more likely just amusingly ironic.

With her coming on as SoS, this eliminates the possibility of her challenging him in 4 years. In 8 years she will be, in my opinion, too old. We will have had 8 years of a young, vibrant President who (hopefully) has done a lot of great things. I don't see America wanting to go from that to an older person (of any gender or color) who came into the national spotlight in the late 80s/early 90s. By 2016 she will be a symbol of the PAST to a lot of people. I believe 2008 was her slim window of opportunity, and that has since passed.

I actually think she knows she missed the window and that she's not planning on running again. And maybe THAT'S why she took the SoS position. It's as close as she's going to get to the Presidency and gives her the opportunity to represent our country internationally. And SoS is a pretty sweet gig! I imagine it could be much more fun and interesting that being a senator. Maybe that's what it's about. Love what you do, and you'll never have to work a day in your life.

But you're right. Never say never. And with her drive and ambition, I wouldn't put a run past her. Stranger things have happened - like the election of a black man from Hawaii named Barack Hussein Obama to POTUS.

:hi:

31. She would have never challenged Obama in 2012, she's not Kennedy.
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 01:36 PM by Beacool
For all the adoration that the progressives feel for Teddy, what he did in 1980 was pretty despicable.

As for 2016, she would still be younger than Reagan and McCain. I don't have a cristal ball, so I don't know what will happen in 8 years, I'm just saying that she's still viable. The party only has 3 super stars: the Clintons and Obama. Either one of them carry a lot of weight within the party's rank and file.

As for cynicism, the cynic in me says that Obama will piss off most of the left because he will be far more centrist that they assumed him to be. It's no secret that I was never a big fan of the guy, but I will withhold judgment until he actually is in office performing the job. I wish the same courtesy was afforded Hillary.

46. oh. well. carry on then.
LOL :)

All I can say is, try to cut them a break. I mean like it or not, right or wrong, the Clintons pissed a lot of people off in the primary and that has resulted in many people being really distrustful of them. And lots of people got their feelings hurt all the way around - Obama supporters and Hillary supporters. Lots of people became really disillusioned. My sense is that once she gets into her role as SoS, if she does a good job, plays nice with Obama, and keeps the drama to a minimum...that people will ease up on her and the vitriol will decrease. I'm trying to work on that process myself.

Sometimes I think arguing back about it just keeps it going. If you feel someone wrongly slams the Clintons, it may be better just to let it go. 1) You aren't gonna change their mind with your post 2) Arguing gives them a reason to keep the emotions high and 3) They can't argue with anyone if no one engages them.

Just an idea. One that I have a hard time doing myself. But we've gotta come together somehow... eventually... maybe...

21. Hillary made the wise choice.
Hillary wants to serve the public and decided she could best do that under Obama. Please respect her decision. She sees the strong leader in Obama that seems to allude your clouded senses.

Did you secretly want this administration to fail so it could look good for Hillary's comeback? Even now with all the sh-t we've got to deal with?

33. Oh, I respect her decision.
I'm just leery of seeing her in a job where she will be serving at the pleasure of the president.

I don't wish for his administration to fail, more for our sakes than his. The country can't afford another failed administration, but I see him with clear eyes and take his pronouncements with a grain of salt. As I said before I will withhold judgment until he actually is performing his job. But his feet will be held to the fire, the same as the other 43 president who preceded him, he's no exception.
