Ann Romney has lumpectomy
Ann Romney, who has battled multiple sclerosis, e-mails a statement to reporters about her health:

Last week, following my annual mammogram at Brigham and Women's Hospital, I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Sutu (DCIS). While this is commonly referred to as early stage breast cancer, it is technically not cancer but rather pre-cancer, as it has not become invasive. Today, I have had a lumpectomy. This procedure does not require hospitalization.

Mitt and I feel fortunate to have caught this so early. And, it reminds us how important it is for women to have regular mammograms. As in all cases of cancer, early detection is critical. Many families are facing medical hardships — our hearts go out to all of you and also our wishes for healing holidays.

1. May she heal quickly and without incident.
Very scary stuff for any woman to face. I think she is to be celebrated for being up front about this and bringing it to the public attention. Her courage may save lives if it spurs other women to get screened.

15. She better heal quickly or Mittens will follow McInsane's example and dump her for a
younger model.

Except that he might not want someone whose hair is as nice as his.

26. I Don't Like Mitt's Politics At All, At All
But there is no evidence that he is anything less than a committed husband...That wasn't the case with McSame...

3. Ironic. She once said on the campaign trail that having cancer would be better than having MS

7. Looks like she said she personally would have preferred at one point
to get cancer and DIE, rather than to continue living with the pain of MS.

Not the most sensitive thing to say--especially when there are millions who are living with one form of cancer or another, and many who have survived cancer--but it is an understandable thing for someone suffering to say.

4. It is very fortunate....
that this was caught early and that Ann Romney will be fine. However, how does this qualify as "Breaking News" on MSNBC? I swear, somebody need to have an intervention with the person who controls the the "Breaking News" button. Obviously, this person is in crisis. I am so tired of "Breaking News".

11. And, it reminds us how important it is for women to have regular mammograms.
For those who have doctors and can afford them.

What's more important is to have health care in this country so that EVERY WOMAN, MAN and CHILD can go see the doctor when they need to. Put yourself in the place of the woman who doesn't have health care and can't afford to go see a doctor when she finds a lump on her breast. Try that, Ann.

If you want to know what fear is, try to put yourself in that woman's shoes.

29. You made several nasty cancer "jokes" in this thread
Be an adult and ask the Mods to delete them.

Shameful. It is obvious no one you've ever loved has suffered from cancer.

21. And the myth of "early detection" carries on...
*sigh* Early detection is not everything. If a cancer is really virulent, early detection means little to nothing.

The best early detection can do is give you a chance before a malignancy gets into the lymph nodes, or travels even more deeply throughout the body. But really, it's all about the pathology.
