The Hill: Caroline Kennedy Interested in Clinton's Seat
Caroline Kennedy Interested in Clinton's Seat
@ 2:13 pm by Walter Alarkon

Caroline Kennedy is interested in filling Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) seat once Clinton becomes secretary of State, according to multiple news outlets.

Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and a campaign aide to President-elect Barack Obama, has talked to New York Gov. David Paterson (D) about the vacant post, according to ABC News sources.
New York State Democratic sources told NBC News that Kennedy has indicated her interest in being appointed to the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy (D).

Another Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has taken himself out of the running, according to NBC's Andrea Mitchell. Other Democrats mentioned for the spot include New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Rep. Brian Higgins and Rep. Nydia Velazquez.

Though appointing Caroline Kennedy wouldn't appear to directly help Paterson with upstate voters he needs for reelection in 2010, she could help him win access to the White House and national donors, according to Senate Guru. Kennedy, along with Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), endorsed Obama early on in the Democratic nomination fight. She was also a member of his vice presidential selection committee.

7. I feel the same way. The part I am most skeptical of is her wanting the seat.
However, she has involved herself more in this election then at any other time IMO - endorsing Obama early, writing the NYT OP - "A President like my Father", working on the VP selection and vetting team, campaigning A LOT for Obama - so it isn't exactly inconceivable that she does want it now.

13. she could see this as a chance to participate and advance a legacy
like her dad's, one of hope and possibility. I would love this. She is such a great lady.

24. perhaps
she saw what a fuck up the last 8 years have been and decided to use her name to get involved and do something about it. She did a great job on the VP vetting team (ok if John McCain knew how to vet a VP, then maybe the race would have been closer).

I think she'd make a great senator, and my only regret would be not being one of her consituents.

5. She's great, but I'm sick of all these family dynasties.
She would be a US senator without ever running for or holding an elected office. Her qualification would be her family name, her connections, and the fact that she is "royalty".

I'm with Glen Greenwald on this kind of thing.

8. And she would be subject to relection just like anyone else....
.... from what I know of her, I'd rather have her than some of the folks in there who's last name is oh .... say "Shelby" or "Chambliss."

As long as the dynasty in question isn't Bush, I dont see the problem.

15. I'm so sick of this crap
I defy someone that wants her in as Hillary's replacement to explain to me how she is the most qualified person for the job. She's not. Yet ANOTHER dynasty member.

Women's Groups Endorse Carolyn Maloney for Clinton's Senate Seat

"Sen. Hillary Clinton leaves big shoes to fill, and Carolyn Maloney has what it takes. She knows how to tackle big issues and is willing to take on entrenched interests," said Kim Gandy, president of NOW. "She is a tireless advocate for her constituents, and one of the most effective legislators in the House."

"I have worked with many legislators over the course of several decades. Congresswoman Maloney gets things done whether in the majority or the minority," said Eleanor Smeal, Feminist Majority President. "She is an effective legislator who never takes no for an answer when it comes to fighting for women of the world or the citizens of New York."

With only 16 women out of 100 senators, the women of New York, the nation and the world need Carolyn Maloney's determination, tenacity, creativity and keen legislative skills to address the countless issues facing women, workers and families. Maloney has authored and passed key legislation including expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Debbie Smith Act for processing of DNA evidence/rape kits; she has a 100 percent rating from the Children's Defense Fund; is a leader on reproductive issues in the U.S. and internationally; and is a leader in the fight to end gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
