Who Obama might pick for the post remains a mystery - The Obama team would not comment. But some names discussed include Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., former NATO commander Wesley Clark, Google's renewable energy guru Dan Reicher, MIT's Ernest Moniz, even the Republican governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Clark was one of the first to say energy is a national security issue, so he was ahead of the game. That said, I don't think he knows that much about energy issues.

12. General Clark is well versed in energy issues

As an example he is the chairman of the board of Emergya Wind Technologies and was also the keynote speaker at the American Wind Energy Association's 2008 Fall Symposium. I doubt he'll get the appointment but if he does I would think he'd have to step down from Emergya Wind and I really can't see that happening.

but to add to your comment, Clark also keynoted this year's international solar meeting in CA. Before he was drafted to run in 04, Clark lead a hydrogen engine company. He's been at this for a long time. Clark wrote a study about energy and security in 1974. Energy issues have been on his mind for a long time.

22. Actually there are many who said it long before Clark left the military

Many examples exist in the Senate record - at least back to 1989 - the online record doesn't go back further. (Gulf War 1 was started by a fight over oil - for one - with Iraq accusing Kuwait of "slant drilling")

That said, Clark is a good choice.

As to Kerry, I don't understand why his name is being placed in all these lists. He is more powerful and needed as Chair of the SFRC and a senior Senator on Commerce and Finance. He will be the Senator leading the effort to pass a global warming treaty and he has introduced bi-partisan sponsored legislation for high speed rail.

He actually is the Senator to most likely be the leader of the liberal wing of the Senate in the future - there is no one who has close to his range of expertise.

23. I think the direction will be moving the country to the energy economy

It will call for a strong strategic mind aside from experience with energy issues, although Clark has a lot more of that than is widely known. I know you would remember his business connections with electric motors from 2003, but since then he is very involved in alternative energy concerns. He speaks on wind and solar everywhere around the world. He brought a factory with almost a thousand jobs to Arkansas to manufacture parts for wind technology. And he's long been working with a green housing group. I haven't seen any daylight between Clark and Obama on energy policy, so there wouldn't be issues with that. I would have liked Homeland Security for him, but I can see how he fits with Obama's energy program and I think Energy Secretary is going to be a very big task in the Obama administration. I'm not convinced he will be the choice, but he's a very good choice.

And the brand new article (30 minutes old) now has John Bryson > mentioned as one of the top contenders for Energy Secretary.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- In step with naming climate policy as one of his top priorities, President-elect Barack Obama is expected to soon officially designate his senior energy and environment cabinet officials, possibly next week, according to people familiar with the matter.

Obama has vowed to rewrite the country's energy and environment policies, creating a low-carbon economy through strict regulation of greenhouse gases and shifting away from conventional fossil fuels to renewables, efficient and clean energy.

Transition officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said research portfolios for the Energy Secretary, Interior Secretary and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator designates had to be finalized by this Sunday. The Obama team is also still deliberating on who to appoint as head of the President's Council on Environmental Quality and whether that person should act as a special energy/climate change czar to oversee and coordinate Obama's policies between the different departments, or if a special position should be created.

As with his appointments, Obama is expected to announce the posts simultaneously.

None of the potential candidates could be reached for comment, and representatives of both the potential designates and the Obama transition team declined to comment.

People close to the Obama team said one of the top contenders for the energy secretary post is the former chairman of Edison International, John Bryson, one of the strongest advocates for moving the country's gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles to electric cars. Bryson has also served on the California Public Utilities Commission, and was a co-founder and attorney of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a powerful environmental lobby group with strong ties to Democrats.
