Obama Pledges Not To Smoke In White House
WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama said you won't catch him lighting up a cigarette in the smoke-free White House.

Asked in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" whether he has kicked the habit, the president-elect admits there are times when he's "fallen off the wagon." But he adds under the circumstances, he thinks he's "done a terrific job" of making himself "much healthier."

1. President Bartlett (West Wing) used to smoke outside the oval office.

Is outside the WH also "smoke-free"?

2. I can picture him huddled in the doorway during a rainstorm
puffing away like the smoking ladies in our office used to do. Rain, snow sleet fog nothing stopped these smokers from the swift completion of their appointed butts.

8. New that some people didn't like Chantix. Didn't know side effects were that bad.

9. I did Chantix for 6 weeks.
Yes, the possible emotional instability is a side effect (I went through it, so has everybody else I know who's done it)... however, if one *knows* it's a side effect ahead of time, precautions can be taken.

Sadly, though, chantix helps a regular smoker quit, but it does nothing for "relapse" smoking binges... unless one is permanently taking it, which is *not* advisable.

19. I'm sure he would be very safely monitored. It's always safer to quit!
And given his family history w/cancer he really NEEDS to quit. Plus, it sets a poor example for his children and young people in the country.

I love the guy, but he needs to cut that shit out.

while walking the new pup.
I've got him figured out...

6. I wish he'd finally quit-like his wife made him promise he would before running...
Edited on Sun Dec-07-08 10:58 PM by jenmito
He should use the patch along with the fake plastic cigarette. My husband used to smoke a pack a day and I wouldn't go out with him 'til he quit smoking. We've been married 10 years now and he quit a year before we got married. And I KNOW he doesn't "sneak a smoke." My nose is trained to smell a cigarette smoked over 24 hours ago. :D

ETA-I guess I got a little off-topic. :)

Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 12:15 AM by jberryhill
If he needs a break from stress, and if he gets that from a cigarette, then IMHO by all means he should have one.

It's not going to kill him in eight years, and I'd rather not have the President being stressed out.

Taking on the most stressful job on the planet is not the time to quit smoking.

18. Agreed. Let the man smoke and worry more about how he runs the country.
The people who really need to worry are his kids and Michelle, and I'm sure he won't put them at risk.

I was able to quit for 12 years.

I am pleased that Obama will be my butt-buddy.

22. Hillary established a smoke free White House.
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 01:06 AM by Beacool
Bill would sneak a cigar (pls. no sophomoric jokes) on the Truman balcony once in a while, particularly when Hillary was out of town. That's when he would also get the chef to cook some of his fatty favorites. Maybe if Bill had listened more to Hillary's health concerns, he would have avoided his heart problems.

23. You guys don't you realize what this means?
this means that he relates to those of us who are trying to quit and as such will tailor a health plan to meet the needs of everyday people. Isn't that wonderful?
