Bush's new neighborhood: until 2000, blacks banned - unless they were servants
Nice to know Dear Leader likes to make headlines even as he plans his exit. His new digs are in an exclusive Sundown Town community where the darkies could come in as hired help, but they couldn't live there. His new neighbors are also afraid the beloved Dear Leader will being the anti-Bush riff raff in.

As President Bush prepares to move into his new Dallas home at the end of his term, neighborhood residents worry about having him close by.

..."I am afraid with all the negative press the president has been getting, the whole neighborhood is going to be a target," said the woman, who refused to give her name.

...But the exclusive Dallas community the Bush family will soon join has a troubled history of its own.

Until 2000, the neighborhood association's covenant said only white people were allowed to live there, though an exception was made for servants.

Enacted in 1956, part of the original document reads: "Said property shall be used and occupied by white persons except those shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of different race or nationality in the employ of a tenant."

2. Uh oh! George may not be invited over for tea.
He's going to bring down the property values. Watch for an exodus of present homeowners, especially once they see him dragging in his slime...Cheney, Rove, et al. How does it feel, Georgie?

I'll bet it didn't even take facelifts to get their noses that high up in the air. What a sorry lot they are. True bigots.

4. Sundown towns
Doing some reading in our UU magazine I recently learned where the term "sundown towns" came from. Seems a WI town (makes me embarrassed I live in WI) put a sign up reading, "n----r, don't let the sun go down on you in this town." This was prior to the Fair Housing Act in the 1960's. We had several of these towns in WI, Appleton being one of them. Edina, MN was another I remember from the article. The author thought he would find a dozen or so of these towns across the nation but found about 500. I live in Wausau, WI and as a child in the 50's we had only one black person in town and he was a chauffeur for a wealthy woman. Now we have a very diverse culture with Hmong, blacks, Vietnamese, etc.

I didn't even know there were places that still were white only up until this century. That dumbass, nameless woman probably voted for W... I hope she enjoys having him livin' in da hood.

9. I believe it is an unenforceable covenant
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 09:46 AM by Jake3463
Laws were passed since than that made the covenant illegal. The community probably never updated its charter till someone read it in 2000 and said we need to get this out of there.

10. Can any black people be located in the neighborhood?
I'm curious. Sure, it would be illegal to bar African-Americans from home ownership in the area, but that doesn't mean that association members didn't continue to enforce the covenant by other means...
