The US Senate is helping Hillary Clinton circumvent her emolument problem
Is it just me, or does that sentence creep you out too?

Basically, they're cutting the SecState salary so that her employment in the executive branch doesn't conflict with the "emoluments" clause in the Constitution.

But here's the irony: as Secretary of State, Hillary will have job responsibilities equivalent to those of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, but she'll only be earning about 85 cents for every dollar he earns.

1. Had I been able to object, I wouldn't have let my emolument be circumvented...
...way back in 1957.

But I was just a wee baby boy...

3. It's been done before, it'll be done again, it doesn't creep me out.
Both Republicans and Democrats have done it before too.

It's obvious that the purpose of the clause is to make sure that people are not deliberately voting to increase the pay for a position that they want later -- not to penalize people from serving in the position if a president happens to raise the pay as part of some misguided belief that a person who is in office when a salary increase happens will be a horrible nasty evil appointee. She will not be receiving the benefits of any executive order or law passed raising the SoS's salary.

Our nominee has made his decision. I do not think she was the absolute best qualified for the position, but I believe she will do her best.

7. No, let the market decide. We have to pay the cabinet men bigger salaries
because they have families to support. This Clinton gal is probably gonna leave the job in a few years anyway to raise her kids and run the household for her fella.
