2. Recommended
Seriously, after 2004, Reid was chosen because he was a moderate from a Red State. The party was in disarray and scared of becoming the party of the NE and West Coast.

That was, of course, until Dr. Dean implemented his 50 State Strategy.

The Democrats do not need to be afraid to lead.

Dump Reid now.

This is what I see so far: An auto company bailout will happen. But now the pubbies are on record as having stiffed American workers and jobs, so they look awful right now. And Bush comes to the rescue with the bailout making the pubbies look even worse. And Reid played along with them letting them screw themselves.

103. The majority leader could force the Republicans to actually filibuster
That is the job of the Majority Leader, not the Whip. He should force them to actually go through with the filibuster. I wonder how many Republican filibusters would really succeed if they were actually force to follow through with them. Right now, they only have to threaten to filibuster, and he backs down. He did the same thing with Bush's veto threats. Instead of forcing Bush to actually veto a bill, they just backed down. John Kerry got skewered by his "voting for the Iraq war funding before voting against it", and yet every time it was brought up, nobody every mentioned that Bush threatened to veto the original funding bill because it had loan provisions instead of guaranteed money. Even Kerry neglected to bring that up in the presidential debates. The Democrats should force the Republicans to stand up and make a huge spectacle. The last time they did that, with the Terri Schiavo case, they suffered a huge backlash from the general public.

Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 08:18 AM by Mass
Reid voted NO probably so that he can reopen the vote.

Democrats not voting:

Biden
Kennedy (sick)
Kerry (in Poland, for the climate change talks)
Wyden (not sure why he did not vote).

Far from 11, and it would not have made the bill pass: 52 votes + 6 = 58, still short of 60.

38. Where do you get 11 from?
There were really 3 Democrats who voted against it (Reid's no is a procedural vote - he would have been a yes had there been sufficient votes. There were 4 who didn't vote - one was in Poland representing the Senate and unofficially the Democrats at a Climate Change meeting, one is said to sick, - but the fact is that had Reid needed just 4 more votes he would have scheduled the vote today and called to get them back.

So, in fact - Reid lost 3 members of the caucus. The other thing is that Senators are independent. They are responsible for their own votes. Reid can not make them vote for something they don't agree with. (Things that he might be fairly criticized for are when he scheduled the vote and the alternatives he backed - if a case can be made that a vote today would have passed or that there was a viable compromise.)

Make the bastards filibuster. They have run the Senate with the threat (I SAID THREAT) of a filibuster. Over 70 times. And not one single time did Harry call their bluff. He literally let the minority party run the Senate. We need Democrats that are willing to fight at least half as hard as the republicans.

78. We know the republicans are our enemy, but what kills us is when our so-called friends
like Sen Reid stab us in the back. All the republicans have to do is tell Sen Reid that they threaten to filibuster, and bingo, bango, Harry capitulates. "Please, please don't filibuster, please". Over 70 times the repukes threatened to filibuster (a new world's record) and Harry caved each and every time. The minority is running the Senate and it's because Harry is spineless. Give me one example where he stood up to the crooked, traitorous repukes, give me one.

54. Not to mention he always buckles like a belt whenever a filibuster is threatened
Why exactly was it not possible to make the Repukes go in front of the C-Span cameras and say why they think the American worker should be nothing more than a mindless wage slave? The people were for this bridge loan. It would have made the Republicans look small and petty to argue against workers. Instead Reid folds yet again and the Republicans look like they merely have a reasonable difference of opinion.

Reid is weak, feckless, and needs to go.

LET the republicans talk and talk and talk about how much they hate unions, and how they wanted to dramatically slash wages within the next 12 months. This is not an anti-union country, and it would've been political suicide for them.

71. What does that mean?
It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture and have the whole Senate vote on a bill.

There is no other way to bring that bill before the Senate until cloture is invoked.

Senators talking for weeks on end is the memories of an earlier era, not today.

Because it has Bush and Paulson so freaked they're looking at tapping the TARP funds to bail out the auto industry.

That would mean there would be no strings attached for unions or the companies, just like the TARP funds going to the banks.

...but what does it take to make a decent living in the 21st century usa? mortgage, health care, gas, food, school, medical...etc.

If auto workers can't do all that comfortably, there's something wrong with the industry, i.e., the system (i.e., captialist system).

53. Yes, let's get mad at the Democrats because the Republicans didn't vote for it.
That's a good idea.

They can do that. Nothing the Majority Leader can do about it.

65. No, they didn't.
They threatened to, and we caved. We damn well should've forced the filibuster, because if they acted on their bluff, it would've been political suicide for them.

72. Oh, for God's sakes, the cloture vote was the filibuster.
52 - 35. Now there is talk that we should MAKE THEM filibuster, as in talk non-stop on the floor of the Senate, but in modern times, filibuster means not getting to 60.

Why don't people know this? This isn't Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. This is how a filibuster works.

76. No, it wasn't.
Cloture is NOT filibuster. There are very precise reasons for threatening to filibuster, and very precise strategic reasons we should have forced them to filibuster as threatened.

I assure you I'm VERY clear on the difference between the two--and that is NOT how a filibuster works.

81. For the record they did not filibuster. They threatened to. There is a huge difference.
The republicans have used the "threat" to run the Senate from the minority. Make the bastards actually filibuster. Show the public how they are obstructing the legislative process. When the shoe was on the other foot, the Democrats didn't threaten to filibuster because the republicans "threaten" once again with the threat, to eliminate the filibuster rule.

Also, I think the majority leader has other options for negotiating. If Sen Reid can't do anything about it, then get someone in there that can.

There's plenty he can do- he just lacks the political fortitude to hold senators accountable for their behavior.

63. All I hear in the background on the radio is "Democrats offer concessions" and I think...WHA? WTF???
Who the hell is running the show?
Where the hell are all those Dems who wanted our votes -- wanted the working class of the USA to VOTE FOR THEM????

I'm disgusted.
Again.

Harry Reid needs to retire.
We need vigorous leadership.
And
We need it NOW!

83. We are mostly all agreed that Reid needs to go; now what specifically
do we do to get him replaced? Sitting in our home complaining is going to get us nowhere. Who do we call? I am unfortunately represented by 2 absolutely assinine GOPer senators, McConnell and Bunning, so there is no one for me to call. Could those of you lucky enough to be represented by Dems please get on the phone and demand change.

HOW did he ever get this position? Did no one else want it? Was that election rigged, too?

He reminds me of a whipping boy. Trouble is, WE'RE the ones getting spanked & kicked in the gut.

How can any one who truly backs the hard working blue collar Americans ever have let a cut in pay enter the equation?

Especially in an economy such as this.

I hope these hooligans are voted out next time around. At
least the republicans were able to accomplish what they set
out to do, totally screw everone. I doubt Reid could even get
that right. I'm going third party when it comes to
congressional picks. Unless they change leadership there is
not going to be anyone left to lead!
