There were enough Democratic votes to pass the bailout tonight.
Democrats voting No:

Baucus
Lincoln
Reid
Tester

Not voting:

Wyden
Kerry
Kennedy
Biden

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00215

YEAs 52
NAYs 35
Not Voting 12

We could have gotten to 60 with those Democratic votes.

That's just sickening to me.

2. Well first of all, keep in mind that those not voting are often paired with republicans
who also aren't voting. That way, if there is an emergency or major reason why a legislator can't be there, it won't affect the outcome.

Second of all, Reid probably voted against it because that way he can make a motion to reconsider the vote later (which you can only do if you are on the winning side).

5. So it is all planned ahead of time.
The union busting, that is, in this case.

They all knew what would happen.

16. Don't think so, not exactly.
No one really sure. Hagel ready to vote Yes, I think.

26. I'm not sure what you mean.
If you mean that people paired votes, then yes. People pair votes all the time, on all issues. Not everyone can always be present to vote in the Senate.

3. Yep
Or even some combination that included Smith, Sununu and Hagel. I can't understand why this failed. I guess it's going to have to get real ugly before the country really wakes up.

voting no? Those Dems are very smart.

I'm still following along in that thread. I'm not the one to ask--all my legislative knowledge comes from reading here and SchoolHouse Rocks.

Sorry, Mad.

22. The best explanation I heard was that
he was working with Crocker on the compromise bill that would pass handily. The agreement fell apart. Reid spoke of some Senators wanting to leave and vote tomorrow - but others had early flights out. (he said that - me, I assume they could have been re-scheduled.

The fact though is that even if Kerry returned and all the others not voting voted - there are still not enough.

Three voted No.

7. Can Obama vote on this?
When is the effective date of his resignation?

I know Biden was going to resign in January... but I thought Obama has already resigned.

17. Reid was a NO vote who only switched for procedural grounds - so he can bring it back up if
necessary.

He wouldn't have had to switch to No if we won.

We actually had 53 No votes tonight.

24. WRONG. There weren't enough Democratic votes available
Kennedy is too ill to attend the vote. With him unable to be present, there's not 60 votes available regardless how many Democrats vote 'yea'.
