LOL at the GOP.... how bad did they fuck this up? This is how bad....

There was a bill on the table to loan $14 billion to the US automakers... that bill had some substantial strings attached to it for the Big Three.

Because the bill failed..... The Bush administration is now going to use some of the TARP to bail out the Big Three instead.

Only this time.... those strings won't be attached.

So.... the GOP killed a bill that had significant concessions TO THEIR POINT OF VIEW in it..... and in exchange, forced the Treasury to INSTEAD give the money to the Big Three without any strings.

This makes Reid either VERY lucky or VERY shrewd. Instead of an ADDITIONAL $14 billion to the auto makers, they'll get their $14 billion from the TARP money that has already been allocated.

13. Of that we can all be sure.
But the OP is being shrewd is asking that, at least shrewd in a way that makes many of us laugh.

2. Reid is not shrewd. It just turns out that the money is going to come from where Pelosi
wanted it to come from in the beginning. Having said that, this whole situation was just another showing of how weak Reid is

12. But
Like babylonsisters post below, it is what Pelosi wanted all along, but in the deal we have the repubs way out on a limb since they denied the American worker a bailout. That makes the pub senators look awful, and if that's what Reid planned, well, then it worked, eh?

We don't get to see all the maneuvers but the outcome is agreeable.

3. You know what else they did? Pissed off a whole lot of people who
won't forget when elections roll around. I imagine they also convinced people who were on the fence about this bailout to jump off that fence on the side of workers, especially given this economy.
Not too bright imo.

11. They forgot that there are also Repub autoworkers
It has been surprising to me that they didn't consider the autoworkers and other laborers that were members of their own party.

7. I'm not saying he's shrewd.... I'm saying he's EITHER lucky or shrewd...

I lean heavily to the "lucky" part on this auto bailout.

6. A side bonus will be the campaign commercials in 2010 -
"Senator Gregg (my state) voted against American workers." Insert picture of bread line/Great Depression footage.

9. Sorry, this makes Reid and the Dems look weak and ineffectual.
It was reported last night that GWB would not let failure of Big 3
be his legacy.

Check this possible Headline: Bush saves Auto Industry, the Dems
left the Auto Industry to fail.

10. I think the headline will be this: "Bush bails out Senate Republicans"

".... saves his own ass (and Harry Reid's) in the process"

15. The TARP money will probably have the same strings attached
The bill probably just allowed the Republicans to be against it publicly while not having to face the consequences of a bankruptcy.

Reid probably knew this, which is why he had had the vote early to get it over with.

16. The Southern Repubs screwed up. Bush is stepping in because of his legacy.
Looks like Corker overplayed his hand. I bet he is the Repthug's new star though.
