3. yes you will...

and hopefully this furor will cause a dialog to occur and make people really think about the matter. I never really gave it much thought before, but that has changed. Just so you know I am fully behind you- civil rights for all or none

on edit: I truly believe that most people on DU are behind you, also. Sometimes it just takes a little bit for people to open their eyes.

6. How does mistakenly using "will"
instead of "shall" show any disrespect to the Civil Rights Movement? And as far as "song you're trying to coopt"- ever hear the saying that imitation is the highest form of flattery? Please don't read this as me jumping on you, just people something out there to think about.

7. Just don't know how anyone who seeks to use this song symbolically could
not know the words...it's a pretty simple song. You must not have been very turned into of cared that much about the Civil Rights movement... until now. This song has been around for decades and the fact that you are using it and don't even know the words is a tiny bit offensive. And yes, I think co-opt is exactly the right word.

8. First, I am not the one who posted the original post...
but I am not going to beat them up for mistaking one word. Was the OP around during these times? Don't know. And, if the poster is younger, our schools don't really teach history very well. Either way it was a mistake- humans make them. I don't believe insult was intended.

12. Hey, did you check the spelling too
or maybe the grammar is a bit off. Co-opt is wrong, the song doesn't belong to you
or to a specific group. I think your real problem is something else but you don't
really want to say the something else, but I see you.

It is "shall". We SHALL Overcome.

Unfortunately ,Too late to edit.

Does it change the meaning?

I think not , but 'shall' makes for a better poetry. You're right in that.

I thank you for your concern, and your continued vigilance.

Keep your eyes on the prize, ....
and keep our quotes true, our spelling pure, and our grammer faultless.

10. "We Will Overcome" has also been used, Professor.
Edited on Fri Dec-26-08 06:33 PM by Bluebear
The phrase "We Will Overcome" is derived from the lyrics to a 1901 hymn or gospel music composition by Rev. Charles Tindley of Philadelphia. Tindley was an African Methodist Episcopal Church minister who composed many hymns and lyrics, some 50 of which are known to have survived. The lyrics to "We Shall Overcome" were combined with Tindley's original melody at a later date. Newer lyrics contained the repeated line "I'll overcome someday," and the phrase, "Deep in my heart," which more likely derive from a later gospel song. Whatever the case, various versions can be traced to integrated meetings of black and white coal miners in the early 1900s and to black churches in the 1800s.<1>
