Speaking of hate and injustice
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 12:54 AM by ProSense
From the Obama-Biden Plan to Strengthen Civil Rights

Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: Obama and Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation, expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act, and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of Justice's Criminal Section.

End Racial Profiling: Obama and Biden will ban racial profiling by federal law enforcement agencies and provide federal incentives to state and local police departments to prohibit the practice.

Inglewood police repeatedly resorting to deadly force

A Times investigation shows that the problem of Inglewood police officers shooting unarmed suspects isn't new.

By Jack Leonard and Victoria Kim
December 27, 2008

One summer evening in 2005, an Inglewood police officer stood with his gun aimed at a schizophrenic man who had been stopped for drinking beer in public.

The officer ordered Jule Dexter to put his hands on the hood of the police car, but Dexter's baggy pants started slipping.

"Please let me pull my pants up," Dexter pleaded, according to a witness' sworn testimony.

"Don't move!" the officer yelled.

But Dexter, 27, reached to pull up his pants, witnesses said. The officer fired four shots into Dexter's back and head, killing him.

Over the last six years, Inglewood police officers have repeatedly resorted to physical or deadly force against suspects who were unarmed or accused of minor offenses, a Times investigation found.

In the span of four months this year, Inglewood officers shot and killed four people, three of them unarmed. The Times' review of court documents, law enforcement records and interviews shows that the problem is not new.

Then there is the Iraq war where hundreds of people---a mother, father, son, daughter, friend, lover, whole families---are dying every month, including many Americans.

Obama is going to have deal with these and many other pressing issues.

1. He has so much waiting for him when he gets into office.....
Great Information. Thank You for posting. I'm about to read all of these articles. Racial profiling or DWB (Driving while black) stops are nothing new and they are getting worse. I'm always scared my son will get nervous and move and something will happen to him. Horrible.

2. Definitely a good start.
We've had eight years of the Bushies letting law enforcement abuse people whenever they wanted.

I certainly hope Obama's administration cracks down on things like racial profiling, disparity in sentencing based on race, and certainly on police brutality. Make an example of a few bad cops, and watch the rest tone things down...

5. This is still surreal
after being beaten down for the last 8 years. But, seeing the 60 Minutes' Obama Wrapup just now has brought our victory a little more into reality.

This is really good to know..thanks, ProSense.
