The Hidden Face of Rick Warren
Unless you’ve been living under a manger for the past week, you know that feminist and gay rights groups are mad as hell at President-elect Barack Obama for choosing popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at next month’s inauguration. Given Warren’s stance on abortion and gay marriage, they believe he is a very poor choice.

I happen to agree, but I didn’t come to that conclusion lightly.

<snip>

“Evil.” If that’s not “demonization of our differences,” I don’t know what is.

The more I read about Warren, the more I learned, and the more convinced I became that he is deceptive and doesn’t deserve the honor of giving the invocation; the more convinced I became that Barack Obama, in his eagerness to bridge social divides, is investing blindly in a bridge to nowhere ... a bridge that Warren is intent on luring the gay community toward only so he can push us off with the aid of the power of the President.

1. I'm really hoping that's not the case with Obama, yet
it reminds me why I voted for Kucinich in the primary.

And guess what? The warren "controversy" is not going away, and won't be over after Pastor Bigot's two-minute national election infomercial.

Memo to Barrack Obama:

Next time brother man, use someone else's civil rights to "bridge that chasm." I've already donated far more than my fair share.

3. I've been living under a manger
Ya know, I was just born, when these three Middle Eastern looking dudes showed up looking for me.

I've been hiding from them in a barn.

They are frighteningly persistent, and the worst part? They're holding suspicious packages. :scared:

7. Great blog!
Favorite quote from Melting Pot: "I’m sick of the double standards, the manipulation of language, and the politics"

Favorite quote of the week, from Mildred Loving:
"not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the “wrong kind of person” for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people’s religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people’s civil rights."

8. Talked to 3 DIFFERENT people at a party that did NOT know Warren was an asshole, this whole thing...
...is a net negative for Warren in my opinion. The bible commands us to let our moderation be known but Warren hasn't been moderate about anything when it comes to his bigotry against gays. I don't believe it's wrong for him to believe what he wants to believe but there's no love in being bigoted against people.

10. Good quote here:
"I am certain that Rick Warren will work with Barack Obama only in the ways that will ultimately help Rick Warren, and further denigrate me. But Obama has, of course, defended his choice:

I am a fierce advocate of equality for gay and lesbian Americans. It is something that I have been consistent on and something that I intend to continue to be consistent on in my presidency. What I’ve also said is that it is important for American to come together even though we may have disagreements on certain social issues.

Disagreements? What a fabulously innocuous word! Obama wouldn’t dare call the Civil Rights Movement a “disagreement.” He would never invite an openly racist pastor to give the invocation at his inauguration. Yet he expects his gay supporters to embrace Warren in the interest of coming together?"

That gets to the crux of the matter.

13. The one "I do" I never wanted to hear.
Warren: I’m opposed to redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.

Beliefnet: Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?

Warren: Oh, I do.
