Summary of today's Poutrages on GD:P
- Some are upset that Obama will end his oath of office with "...so help me God."

I'm an avowed atheist, and I have no problem with this. Almost every President, starting with Washington, has said this.

Get over it.

- Some are upset with what they call the "Inauguration Invitation Scam".

It's a freaking commemorative sent to anyone who donated to the campaign. Are you kidding me? People are actually upset with this?

Get over it.

- Some think that the act of telling someone to "STFU" is censorship. Nevermind that censorship can literally only be done by those in a position of authority, I can't believe there are people who think being told to shut up is the same thing as being forced to shut up.

Spare me the "peer pressure" argument. Have enough emotional strength to have the courage of your convictions no matter who tells you to shut up.

I reserve the right to say "STFU" to anyone I feel like it.... you, of course, have every right to ignore my ...ahem... "advice".

Get over it.

- Some are wondering why Obama hasn't made an annotated list of every gay friend and family member he has.

If Obama DID give a list, he would be ridiculed as almost everyone is who says something along the lines of "some of my best friends are gay". If he DIDN'T give a list, he would be ridiculed as being out-of-touch with the gay community.

It's a set-up question that has no right answer for Obama. It's bullshit.

The Warren thing was a mistake... but quit looking for ways to beat Obama over the head.

- Some Deaniacs (a group I belong to and I would like to point out that Howard Dean is what led me to DU five and a half years ago) think that the fact that Howard Dean was not in attendance at a 15-minute press conference introducing Tim Kaine as DNC head means that Obama was "snubbing him".

Howard was fulfilling his promise to visit every state and territory of the United States by visiting American Samoa and was actually on a plane at the time of the press conference.

He's not feeling slighted... so fellow Deaniacs.... lay off.

Did I get them all... are there any more examples of misplaced or exaggerated outrage at Obama that I missed?

....and please.... feel free to tell me to "STFU". I promise I won't succumb to the "peer pressure" and stop voicing my opinions.

:eyes:

9. Oh... believe me.. I still laugh at your superstitions and mythology....

...but I'm not going to be outraged at Obama for using the word "God" in his oath.

In a perfect world, Americans would take oaths with their hand on a copy of the Constitution.....

..... and our money would say "In Justice We Trust"

But there are too many things to be sincerely outraged about to worry too much about a freaking phrase in a freaking oath.

14. Agreed. Sometimes I really do believe there are just too many groups
represented under this big tent of ours, and you can never satisfy all of them. A viable third party would be a great thing, and all the people who feel they're not represented by the big two could migrate there.

Atheist here too... not outraged at all by some ceremonial words when there's just SO much more to be upset about, REAL things that affect many lives, policy, etc. After eight years of true outrage, I find myself putting things in perspective. I'll make room in my life for more outrage when Obama's actually IN office and legitimately screwing things up. He's only human... he's bound to do it, y'know? I have four to eight years to be outraged yet. No rush on my part.

18. Dean is feeling slighted. But I am not pouting or outraged about that.
This is a discussion board. People discuss topics. The list of topics you're upset about, that you've provided, is just grist for the mill, par for the course. Your demand that people "get over it" is well, stupid. They're not going to do that just because you say so.

If people want to get annoyed with Obama for those things, that's up to them. You're not going to control people's behavior by posting a list of "How Dare You Discuss These Matters" topics, followed by "Get over it" and a throw-down that you're going to keep battling the forces of...er, people who don't agree with you, perhaps? Followed by the Eye Roll guy? :eyes:

If these sorts of posts really do bother you so much, you shouldn't "STFU," but maybe YOU should "get over it" and you should maybe use that HIDE THREAD feature to save yourself having to write posts such as this one you've just crafted. It's easier than calling out "some people" for posting about topics with opinions that don't meet with your approval.

I also think you SHOULD keep voicing your opinions, just like others with opinions that aren't yours do.

Might be more productive to voice them in the original thread, though.

IMO.

On The Subject Of Poor Howard Dean:

http://www.americablog.com/2009/01/obama-tells-dean-hes-not-welcome-at.html

Former Gov. Howard Dean is not on the list of attendees for the event, a noticeable nonattendance for someone largely credited with revitalizing the Democratic Party ranks and contributing - whether politically or through his 50-State Strategy - to major electoral gains.
In fact, AP reports that Obama's people told Dean he wasn't welcome:
But Democrats with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid angering the Obama team, say Dean won't attend the event at the request of Obama advisers.

-----------------

Politico is reporting today that Obama chose to visit DNC headquarters Thursday for a joint press conference with Dean's DNC replacement, Gov. Tim Kaine, on a day that Dean happened to be in American Samoa, about 7,000 miles away from Washington D.C., fulfilling a promise to visit every state and U.S. territory as DNC chairman.

Dean loyalists are quoted as not being happy about the slight, not at all.

"The snub today was no accident," one unnamed Dean all is quoted as saying in the Politico piece. (Burlington Free Press)

22. STFU ...

Funny about that. I tend to get louder when someone tells me to STFU, and anyone who pays attention should know this. So, I'm not really seeing the censorship angle with it, not since it makes me LOUDER.

Anyway ... I'm reserving my outrage for when Obama starts enacting polices I think are mistakes, which is pretty much where I've been from the beginning.

Edited on Sun Jan-11-09 02:55 AM by MrModerate
But I think I see where some of it is coming from. If you look at the craven mismanagement of Reid, Pelosi, et al, it's easy to see in Obama's "moderate" stances so far a continuation of their wholesale capitulation to the wingnuts in the name of phony bipartisanship.

A lot of us wanted *radical* change after 8 years of Bushian radicalism. Obama seems to be more concerned with governing a fractious nation in a period of real danger than collecting scalps and spitting on the despicable, so some disappointment is inevitable.

and expect them to respect my right to tell them to go fuck themselves.

The Warren thing, on the other hand, has me just thinking Obama's just another politician being a politician.

Which, of course, he is... and I supported him wholeheartedly in the election.

Now, I just don't really give a shit, because like I said, he's a politician. Which we knew.

To be honest- I had higher hopes for this presidency, seriously. I'm sure the guy knows the slap in the face this is to us, yada yada yada. He's not apologizing, and I won't go on.

I guess my level of enthusiasm in this presidency is correlated with this president's level of respect for us gays. :eyes:

Go figure. Seemed like a great idea at the time. Now it's clear that it was just the lesser of 2 evils.

And I didn't distort what the OP wrote... calling for the impeachment of Obama because of what Bush did is disgusting and should be called out as such.

53. STFU.
:hi:

Or not. It's a bright spot for me to see so many people finally blowing through the fog of "hope" and "change" to see clearly what they elected. I hope none of them STFU.

I notice you haven't mentioned the weightier offenses Obama is guilty of since he won the election. His center-right cabinet of people, for example.

Some of those you mention aren't as substantive, of course. Still, if we could all quit gushing about how Obama the center-right president is going to "save" us poor helpless fools, I'm ready to move on to pushing AGAINST his center-right agenda, and pushing the nation TOWARDS the left.

If that has to be accomplished by a bunch of political bullshit, so be it.

I'd rather be blunt and direct, myself, but whatever works.

61. Don't forget Sanjay Gupta.
DUer: The selection of Gupta is a major insult to Dean!

Dean: Gupta's a great pick.

DUer: Gupta is totally unqualified for the job, unlike past greats like Jocelyn Elders.

Elders: Gupta's a great pick.

Get over it.

I worked for the DOD for 30+ years and every function was opened with a benediction from one religion or another. I was bewildered at first, as I was taught the "separation of Church & State" line, but it didn't bother me after I realized it took seconds and then it was onto the eats. My boss was an atheist. He would turn his back to the podium during the prayer, then enjoy the eats. Too each his own.

Edited for missed/incorrect word.

They are, after all, pretty much the lifeblood here. There is nothing too small or insignificant that someone will not express poutrage over it.

75. Really, it sounds so much more original if you say...
"Git over it." We're more used to that one.

"- Some are upset that Obama will end his oath of office with "...so help me God."

I'm an avowed atheist, and I have no problem with this. Almost every President, starting with Washington, has said this.

Get over it."

Other avowed atheists and people of all religions seem to take issue with this as there is such a thing as separation between church and state. God has no place in that speech whether God exists or not. Git over it.

"- Some are upset with what they call the "Inauguration Invitation Scam".

It's a freaking commemorative sent to anyone who donated to the campaign. Are you kidding me? People are actually upset with this?

Get over it."

I guess that's not such a big thing to be miffed over. The thing is all the damned money being spent on this stupid event. The super rich and powerful can have their little shits and giggles while the poor and the middle class enjoy reaping the benefits of the last eight years of insanity.

Git over it.

"- Some think that the act of telling someone to "STFU" is censorship.

"advice".

Get over it."

STFU and git over it.

"- Some are wondering why Obama hasn't made an annotated list of every gay friend and family member he has.

The Warren thing was a mistake... but quit looking for ways to beat Obama over the head."

When an elected official of ours gets all buddy buddy with bigots and offers them positions of honor, I'd say we have every right to "beat them over the head". WE elected them. In fact, I consider it our sacred duty to "beat them over the head", when they deserve it. Clearly, in some instances, Obama does. (Note: I am speaking metaphorically)

Git over it.

"- Some Deaniacs (a group I belong to and I would like to point out that Howard Dean is what led me to DU five and a half years ago) think that the fact that Howard Dean was not in attendance at a 15-minute press conference introducing Tim Kaine as DNC head means that Obama was "snubbing him".

Howard was fulfilling his promise to visit every state and territory of the United States by visiting American Samoa and was actually on a plane at the time of the press conference.

He's not feeling slighted... so fellow Deaniacs.... lay off. "

It clearly was a snub and was clearly intended as such. Dean has too much class to shit a brick over it in public, which is why we're glad to do it for him.

Anyway, git over it. Just STFU and git over it.

What, you aren't over it yet?

'show' and spending, seem not to recognize large numbers of people who REALLY WANT TO CELEBRATE this unique event.

102. Individuals may spend whatever they please
on whatever they please. I would think though, that it would be a good idea for the President Elect to set an example in this case. I'm not saying he should be sitting in a tent eating soup, he's the President, he deserves a grand welcome. But the tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands of dollars I'm hearing about going into spending for the event seems pretty outrageous to me.

The official inaugural event will be attended generally only by the well off or extremely well off. As the monkey in the white house put it "The haves and the have mores." People all over the Country are entitled to celebrate and spend whatever they please on celebrating. I'm not saying otherwise.

Rather, I'm saying that the President, of all people, in times of economic hardship, should strive to provide an example of financial responsibility. I don't think that's too much to ask. I don't have exact figures to quote, but the posts I've read have presented some fairly disturbing numbers.
