Message to Obama: the republicans do not want to fucking work with you
Example: the surge in use of the phrase "democrat party" by the GOP. Cantor, Boner et al are putting on a bipartisan facade. They wan't to block any progress you want to make.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 10:54 PM by Hansel
I doubt he thought they would. At least not right away. They'll learn. They need him more than he needs them. This is a lesson they will learn in due time.

Obama is a black man with the middle name Hussein who many people believe is a Muslim who ran for president while many people were still wetting their britches over 911 and against one of the best political machines around and won in a landslide despite being called a terrorist and a Marxist and despite the 24/7 loops of the angry black preacher tapes on every media channel and the deluge of viral email accusing him of everything from being born in Kenya to eating babies. Somehow I think he has the where-with-all to understand how the congressional Republicans operate. Let's give him a little credit.

It will water down every bill as to be nearly meaningless and the Republicans will still vote against it. There is no compromise with these people. The Republican definition of compromise is for you to do everything their way or no way at all.

I agree he looks good now.

But now he needs to have "Lucy with the football" in his rhetorical repertoire.

And anything put in to lure them over needs to be taken out!

And anything and any money going to their districts should be remembered so that when they claim to have helped their district with this stuff, their opponents can blast them with their vote.

28. I think he should keep doing what he's doing...
since the more he compromises with them the stronger their opposition to him is, and he's also proving that even if he gives them most of what they want, they have no plan to support the bill(s), taking away all of their excuses to vote against it. The longer he keeps extending his hand to them, the better he looks and the worse THEY look.

55. But then you don't keep giving them what they want.
You offer what they want, they turn it down, you don't then give them what they want. You take it out and go your way.

Then later offer them what they want. When they turn you down, you take it out again and you go your way.

Continuing to give them what they want when they don't pitch in means that good bills are being watered down with Republican bull. Now they can argue (assuming the stimulus works) that it was their part that did the trick. If it doesn't work, then they can claim that the bad part doomed it and they didn't vote for it anyway. Obama puts them into the perfect position for 2010 messaging by continuing to give them what they want when they keep yanking the bipartisan football away.

Bipartisanship should be a means to an end not a goal in and of itself. And it's painfully obvious for all the bending over backwards to accommodate these thugs there is no working with them. Not one bloody vote in the house. When it goes back for conference what will we see 2 votes? All this watering down for that is not worth it.

didn't really belong in THIS bill anyway. There are some theories out there that these things were purposely put in just so they could be taken out when the Repubs. predictably complained about them. We'll still get those things in another bill.

or compromise. That's all I'm arguing. I cannot understand why that's so difficult to grasp. The bottom line: the president can talk all he wants about bring everyone together and compromising to appease all sides, but many of us are simply arguing that to expect the Republicans to bend is shortsighted. They will NEVER compromise their neocon/pro-corporate/pro-rich/pro-war principles. NEVER!!! For the president to expect such is, to me, very naive!

38. it will be different in the Senate. Senators represent entire states..
House Repubs represent distinct districts that are mostly heavily Republican. However, there will be another vote in the House after the bill is revised and passed in the Senate and then conferenced back to the House. I suspect there will be some moderate Repubs who will vote for it then. It will be risky politically for all the Repubs to vote against this bill. It is like the Dems voting against the soldiers.

Obama is not naive. He knows exactly what the House Republicans are like. I mean, his chief of staff is Rahm Emanuel. He knows what they're like.

People around here need to stop underestimating Obama.

Republicans look like obstructionists and not willing to work with the new President who has been reaching out to them. The public sees this.
