There's a difference between knowing how and what to communicate and being a great speaker. Being Press Secretary requires the former not the latter. Being a great speaker is a plus, but not a requirement.

Too many here at DU are missing this fundamental point.

2. I think "too many" is an exaggeration really
It's seems to be a couple who did the OPs and a very small handful who agreed.

Gibbs is fine and I think well respected right now by 99.5% of the DU community.

Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 03:29 PM by politicasista
Just get out there and tell the truth and make the media look bad with their spin. Mr. Gibbs is doing pretty good so far.

6. I don't think most of the recent press secretaries were stupid.
Ari wasn't stupid. Neither was Scott. Dana was stupid--she had an incomplete grasp of American history and current events.

They all were mouthpieces, though, and that's what made them good Press Secretaries.

I hope Obama's press secretaries, and he will likely have more than one, because the job is a burnout, are both intelligent AND good mouthpieces. See, I'm uninterested in hearing what THEY think. I could give a shit about their opinions or views or attitudes. I'm interested in hearing what Obama thinks. That's their job--to put out the PRESIDENT's message.

8. Rec. #5. Missing the point is a kind way of saying what I feel about the...
...the concern about his manner of speaking.

Whoosh. Over their heads.

10. Wait and see on Dana Perino
It's my guess that when she gets a crack at writing her memoirs, Scotty's won't come close to what she'll have to say. She got hung out to dry so much that she has permanent clothes pin marks on her shoulders - and while she was flapping in the breeze, you could pretty much see the tire tracks from where she got run over by the bus they threw her under.

She always seemed to me to be quietly seething.

15. Well said, and Gibbs is getting better by the day. The guy was terrific in the campaign and . . .
will accel in his new role. Obama knew what he was doing in appointing Gibbs.

16. Half agree. He IS a mouthpiece.
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 06:22 PM by Forkboy
I don't mean that as an insult. It's their job.

If by mouthpiece you mean the complete toadies the Bush Admin used, then no, Gibbs isn't that kind of mouthpiece. But overall he wont deviate from the Obama line. Unlike Perino and Ari and McClellan, Gibbs shouldn't have anything to lie and obfuscate about. :)

The agreement comes on the matter of speaking ability. For me at least, the point is more important than how it's delivered.
