Christianists And Porn
Surprise! There's a significant correlation between consumption of online porn and Christianism:

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama. Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage...

States where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage," bought 3.6 more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. A similar difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behaviour."

Utah is the country's single biggest consumer of online porn. You've got to love those Mormons.

1. Since we're so pure about no "Islamists" on DU, might we use the conventional "Christians"
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 08:22 AM by WinkyDink
and "Christianity"?
The neologisms just sound stupid.

2. Seriously
people on here go ape shit when someone says democrat party because we like to be called the democratic party.

Please identify the religion in the way they prefer to be called which is Christianity.

5. Thank you ........
.... I'm always confused as to why our party, which prides itself on being the party of inclusion, sometimes fails to realize that Christians are its largest religious group.

Something to think about isn't it? ;-)

6. Because some on here confuse Christian
with the apostates dominionist who are trying to enact a moral structure to establish God's kingdom on earth. Those supposed "biblical scholars" fail to see that the entire point of the old testament was man trying to establish God's kingdom in the form of Israel and every time it failed miserably. They fail to see the entire point of Christ's ministry in favor of looking to the Old Testament, a system if your a true Christian, you believe and understand Christ came to end.

16. Isn't that why he said Christianist and not Christians?
To differentiate between the followers of a religion and the ones who aim to use the tenats of that religion to govern? That's the difference between a Muslim and an Islamist as I understand it.

3. Fort Wayne, Indiana
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 08:27 AM by AllentownJake
Lived there for 3 years. Very right wing and very outwardly "moral". Big fundie church based culture.

City had more strip clubs for a city of 250,000 people than I've been to in my life. They had 4 times the number of strip clubs than the area that comprises my home town the Lehigh Valley which has 1,000,000 people.

If there is a business in an area it has to have customers otherwise it would fail.

7. The words "Christian" and "Christianity" exist.
I'm surprised you said "Mormons" and not "Mormonificationotypists."

9. Yet those terms are so broad...
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 10:00 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Hillary Clinton and Rick Santorum are both Christians so the term isn't super-useful.

But you are right that Christianist is unfortunate.

Since the category is a type of conservative bible-belt Christian whose faith is hopelessly entangled with RW political causes I would propose "Christicons," or, since Christianity is all but a given in the Republican party, the less precise but nice-sounding "Theocons."

Some (like me) would question whether Christianist is the only loaded term in the OP headline.

So I propose: Red State Theocons and sexually explicit entertainment

But since the study is merely regional, not mind-reading, the best headline may be: Red States and sexually explicit entertainment

13. I like the term Dominionist
Because it is a recognized description of the theology in this area.

8. Unreliable conclusion from the data offered
One factor in how much internet porn an area consumes is how much non-internet porn is available.

Mom-and-pop video stores in the most conservative locales are less likely to have a XXX section. Cable systems in the most conservative areas are less likely to have hardcore pay-per-view.

Unless the study demonstrated that the internet is not "the only game in town" in some of these locales, the level of internet porn consumption could mean almost anything one wanted it to mean.

14. Simple solution...
To the problem of what label to use on the people most prone to accessing porn, online or whatever.

Christians? Christianists? Christianificationists?

Somehow that doesn't take into account the crazies of other religions who might also be slobbering over their online porn.

so how about...

"Religious fundamentalist fruitcakes"?

That way nobody gets left out and nobody has to feel like their religion is being unfairly targeted.
