3. Edward Kennedy, KBE.

People who do not recognize Queen Elizabeth as their head of state cannot take the title "Sir/Dame", but can take the postnominal letters.

10. Same as Bono, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg....and Rudy Giuliani (to name but a few).
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 11:44 AM by Jackeens
Bono got quite a bit of grief in Ireland for accepting the knighthood, I'll trust the Irish-American community will be kinder on Ted??

13. It seems wrong to attack a man for accepting a British honor, when
that honor is in specific recognition of his work towards peace in Northern Ireland. As an Irish-American, I personally think it would be more offensive for him to reject the honor due to its British nature; I hardly think it would be helpful from the Irish or from the American perspective for a United States Senator and an advocate of reconciliation between the Irish and the British to reject an honorary knighthood.

15. Completely agree....
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 11:56 AM by Jackeens
...not because Royal honours do a whole lot for me, but because it is, as you said, recognition for his life's work, particularly in relation to NI. But you know yourself, there WILL probably be elements of the Irish-American community, Sinn Fein and other Nationalist opinion in Ireland who would prefer him to turn it down. He won't, I'm sure, and I'd be glad of that.

8. Yeah, me too...
A long, long, lifetime of service to his country.
Memories come flooding in.
Recognition well deserved and very much earned.

Sir Edward Kennedy.

6. Should have included Joseph P. Kennedy
Who, during WWII, presented his credentials as the US Ambassador to the Court of St. James.

9. Not sure where our president is. They met yesterday... LOL this exchange:
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Hello, everybody. Good to see you. Where -- where are the Brits?

(UNKNOWN): They're over here.

OBAMA: They're over there, huh?

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN: In fact, Barack, they're everywhere.

OBAMA: Are they? They're spread out?

All right. My understanding is, we're going to do four questions. And we'll just alternate. I'll start off with Jennifer Loven of A.P.

:P

11. That's funny
I wonder if it's protocol that the President not be there.

12. I think it may be protocol.
Congressional addresses for congress critters, I think you're right.

It makes sense that the president has his moments, and that he not appear there and distract attention away from the honored guest with whom he already had his meetings, private and public.
