Hilariously misleading Daily Mail headline: MPs' fury as....Ted Kennedy gets honorary knighthood
Truly, the UK Daily Mail makes the NY Post seem liberal.

Opening line of the article:

"Veteran U.S. senator Edward Kennedy is to be awarded an honorary knighthood in a move which drew immediate condemnation from Conservative MPs."

Which Conservative MPs?

"One frontbencher said: 'I don't think it's appropriate. He hardly had the British interests at heart.' Former Home Office Minister Ann Widdecombe said: 'It seems to me a bit of an odd choice, but diplomacy has no bounds.' "

So, that's one unnamed frontbencher and Widdecombe, the Tory's resident fruitcake.

PS They have a poll on the same page, "Does Ted Kennedy deserve an honorary knighthood?"

Latest:

Yes 12%
No 88&

Lovely paper, lovely readers.

1. I know it's a nice gesture and all
but does anyone over there (other than the Daily Mail) actually care if someone gets an honorary knighthood? My memory dredges up Elton John, Lawrence Olivier, and a few others getting this. Seems like a harmless way to say, "Heck of a job."

3. Elton John and Lawrence Olivier

would be real knighthoods if I'm not mistaken simply because they are British citizens. I was told that honorary knighthoods go to "friends of Great Britain".

on edit: I think they are all pretty much honorary these days, I don't see Sir Elton charging across a field with Lance in hand to defend the honor of HRH Elizabeth the second anytime soon.

4. The Daily Mail and the Tories are the only ones who care about these honours!
Everyone else thinks they've become a joke (which they have - I think I'm the last person in Western Europe not to get one).

7. Ah shucks, thank you dalaigh lllama - here's the address:
Her Majesty The Jackeens,
44 Hero Worship Avenue,
Messiah 0001
Obamaland.

Mind you, the postman's worn out delivering sackloads of mail (some of it quite aggressive and rude), so it might take a while.

But then.....arise Dame Jackeens.

:headbang:

And this is a sad case where the English and the American language diverge:

5. Not Murdoch-owned, but as bad
Owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust plc - this will give you a flavour of their history:

The group can trace its origins back to launch of the mid market national newspaper the Daily Mail in 1896...in 1922 Harold Sidney Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere acquired control of the Daily Mail newspaper and to this date, Rothermere's descendants continue to control the Daily Mail and General Trust. Rothermere and the Mail were editorially sympathetic to Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists and he wrote an article, "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", in January 1934, praising Mosley for his "sound, commonsense, Conservative doctrine". Rothermere visited and corresponded with Hitler. On 1 October 1938, Rothermere sent Hitler a telegram in support of Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, and expressing the hope that 'Adolf the Great' would become a popular figure in Britain. Secret British government papers released in 2005 show that Rothermere wrote to Adolf Hitler congratulating him for the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1938, and encouraged him to march into Romania.
