Poll question: Is it conceivable that SS. Clinton might run against President Obama in 2012?
I'm not starting an argument. I just want to know what you think. And, yes I know it's kind of a stupid question.

3. No. I think she is just discovering how much she likes what she is doing
and that she is actually doing a very valuable service to the USA. She is already a great SS and she impresses other countries favorably, which is a nice change.

...will run if she still wants to be president, or feels unfulfilled.

If it happens, it'll be interesting. Way too early to guess. Don't know how successful Obama will be or how much HRC will enjoy her present position.

I can only see the stimulus working long term and Barack would have a solid case against any opponent at that stage. I think 2016 could still be on the cards with an even more solid resume at that stage. Besides if she keeps Barack on her side and ran in 8 years she would have the best campaigner in town the help her out, the more logical move is 2016 to me.

29. She won't. Even against a weakened President.
Even if she was inclined, she'll remember the lesson of Carter/Kennedy... In 1980, you couldn't get much weaker as an incumbent than Carter and it certainly looked like Ted had the opportunity to take Jimmy down, Ted's negatives notwithstanding. Didn't happen and it wasn't all that close. That is probably the most recent example of a vulnerable president still being too powerful to wrest the nomination from.

There are other examples. Reagan made a run at a somewhat weak Gerald Ford in '76 and actually came closer than Kennedy did, but the power of an incumbent president is just too strong IMO.

She may run again but It will be In 2016 If she does. And then after eight years as Secretary of State she could run as the continuter
of the Obama adminstration since BIden will be 74 and unlucky to run.

If the ANTI Obama mood of the nation is so bad in 2012 that Obama does not see his own administration doing any better in the next 4 years, Hillary would be a good alternative Dem.

I'm just saying, a former S O S would make a great Dem candidate. She would also get the women's vote against a Palin, or a Gingrich, and would do better than Obama with some truly racist idiots in our nation.

20. if Obama somehow decided not to run, they wouldn't pull someone from his administration for 2012
Besides the fact that she would be tied to him, can you imagine the Secretary of State taking a year off to travel around the country? It's a huge job. Just looking at Clinton's jam packed itinerary should tell you that.

The Dems would run a Blue Dog or some other conservative Dem to distance themselves from Obama.

Either way, this is all a thought exercise. If Bush could run in 2004 with a bumpy economy and an increasingly unpopular war, Obama can run in 2012 with whatever life hands him.

Whether she had stayed in the senate or in her current position as SOS, Hillary would never run against a sitting president of her own party. That is not who she is.

37. She will do what she wants. I think there's a big difference if
the sitting prez is vastly successful vs. not-so-much. Most intelligent people wouldn't want to cause a rift if it seems to be working. And if it's working, as in Prez Obama's admin, HRC will have been a major player in that success.

39. I think you are buying into RW talking points about what an unsuccessful
president Carter was. You also seem to be using a crystal ball to predict how successful Obama will be.

That said, the only way that Hillary would primary Obama is if he is a catastrophic failure (ie it won't happen).

I think there are people who let their hatred of all things Clinton cloud their judgement.

40. I think you are full of...assumptions .
Please name all the many successes of the Carter admin. I like President Carter just fine, and thought his heart was and is in the right place. Maybe he just wasn't a good president during difficult times. I do like his continued attempt at diplomacy and think other people should emulate him there. (Might just be happening)

You asked my opinion, I gave it. No, I don't have a crystal ball and never claimed to have one. And no, I'm not letting any hatred of Clinton cloud my judgment. I think she's doing a fine job now.

47. It is not at all clear that Carter, without Kennedy primary challenge
would have won. There was a huge backlash against the way things were going - about 10 liberal Senators - including some previous very strong ones lost - (McGovern, Bayh, Church, Magnason etc)

I don't thin Hillary will challenge Obama - because as a member of his administration (or a member who resigns) it would look and be very tacky. Also, Carter was an extremely conservative Democrat - and Kennedy was from the left. Obama is close to the center of the Democratic party - so there is not enough space on either side for anyone to run - even if he loses his popularity - which we should hope NEVER happens.

Edited on Sun Mar-08-09 11:19 PM by OmahaBlueDog
It's 1976. Is it conceivable that Ted Kennedy will run against President Carter in '80. I don't know - if there's a revolution in Iran, an oil shock, a major economic downturn, massive distrust of government post Watergate and Vietnam, a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a wildly unpopular decision not to go to the Olympics, and an interruption of the wildly popular Battlestar Galactica to announce that Israel and Egypt made peace, then I guess it's conceivable.

For the love of Chrysler, we're less than 2 months into a 4 year term. Get a grip and let's see what happens.

57. That's like Condoleezza Rice running for Prez in 2008 railing against Bush
Can't run for Prez when you are an integral part of a previous administration.
That would be like Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice running in 2008 after being part of the reason for the opposition ticket's reasons for running.

Hillary Clinton will have no chance of running until 2016 and that's only IF she wants to run then.
Her run in 2016 if Obama's policies were successful may make her campaign strong as people would want someone OF a successful administration to continue their work in the next term.

On the other hand if his policies were NOT successful then we're back at the flawed 2012 argument all over again.

61. Depends what you mean by "conceivable".
It is, in theory, possible that Obama will make a practice of feeding babies to his new portugese water-dog because they contain essential minerals and vitamins and he doesn't like their crying, and that the media will discover this and encourage the Democrats to run someone else.

It is not, however, likely that Clinton will run again for president before 2016 unless Obama chooses not to or is unable to run in 2012 (which most certainly *is* conceivable, either for personal or political reasons, but is not likely).
