Why he's the President and you're a fool. (The Pres announces earmark reform.) w/video
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 11:27 AM by Clio the Leo
He is delivering a verbal smack-down to those who whined about earmarks for the last week.

* Calls out those who complained about earmarks as having been some of the biggest proponents of it.

* Points out that SOME earmarks are needed.

* Says this is NOT the time to start getting stingy with federal $$

* Says this is a jumping off point and that earmark reform starts NOW.

* Legislators will be required to publicly announce (via internet) their earmark plans.

* All future earmarks must pass a special committee hearing.

Then walks away from the cameras as if to say, "enough of this BS, I've got REAL work to do!"

3. That was one great short speech.
This President isn't afraid to point out the bullshit and the bullshitters.
I have tremendous respect for this man.

4. Ironically the Repukes will be the most upset to see old-style earmarks go
That's the one truth they leave out when they throw their daily tantrums.

Be careful what you wish for Repukes.

9. Sounds like it was enough to make Boehner cry some REAL tears!
I'm tired of the hypocrisy of the right. While McCain and Boehner moan and wring their hands about earmarks, their party (which is in the minority) can still lay claim to 40% of the earmarks in this bill. Perhaps they can show some leadership by cleaning up their own fiscal house.

<snip>

And Democrats are not alone in funding pet projects. As the minority party in Congress, Republicans claim roughly 40 percent of earmarks, though McCain and House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio, among others, refuse them. The largess is likely to help ease the measure's way through the Senate.

13. He IS the man -
I've been waiting to hear in the MSM this fact about only 1% being earmarks (heard it on some obscure NPR interview) and frustrated that the WH wasn't using their pulpit more effectively to get this out -- it was a surprise to me the 1st time I heard it.

Leave it to BO. He never ceases to impress me; I am so confident and comfortable in his leadership. Where can we find more like him! :)

15. That was excellent.
I love how he's really being the adult, here. Such an amazing contrast to his predecessor.

Basically, "I expect this on my desk by Monday, no bullshit." :D

One day McCain is saying he's wrong, he next he's congratulating him.
