This "choice" "gaffe" could not be more ill-timed.

Just when the GOP leadership seems to be using the same talking points. Steele winds up really exposing the party's fundamental(ist) proble. If the Religious Right calls for his head, it will paint the party as being controlled by thes pharisees. But because there are other elements who are fiscal conservatives and not the least bit religiousm they are going to push back arguing that THe fundies have held too much sway and they should not be aloowed to dominate the apparatus. This is going to be a war for the "heart and soul" of the party.

So while this was probably, ultimately unavoidable, Steele just objectified the the uneasy alliance that is the Reagan Coalition. If Social Conservative win, the Fiscal conservatives will bolt. If the Fiscies win, there are going to be many fundies preachers who say that they are just tired of the GOP and start talking about Third party.

Michael Steele may have just succeded in killing the last bit of what was left of Reagan's legacy; He may have just destroyed the "coalition that changed the trajectory" of the country. ANd there is Nobody.,....I mean.....NOBODY.....who has the clout to put it back together.

2. I'm not 100 percent convinced Steele isn't trolling the GOP at this point.
Then again, he may just be stupid and bad at his job.

He must be a troll (or a mole). Who knows? In any event, he and Rush Limbaugh (and Limbaugh-inspired Republican ilk) are the best things that could possibly happen to the GOP for us right now if for no other reason than to keep the Republicans distracted, oriented, confused, and fighting amongst themselves- while Obama, the Democrats, and the *small* number of "sane" Republicans clean up the mess left by Bushco. Plus, it's certainly entertaining as well. ;-)

5. I think I disagree with your analysis, but I am not sure.
If these Pharisees or Sadducees were the absolute heart or base of the party, why isn't their word law?

They might be the ones who go door to door for a candidate and make phone calls to get people out to vote Republican but they are not the moneyed interests.

I think what most people miss because they are looking at the hard right is the masters of the universe branch of planners in the GOP. They operate in the Republican party the way they operate in a corporation: advance planning and propaganda (PR).

Michael Steele was believed to be the face that would set the GOP up to bridge a perception gap between the haves and the perceived have nots. The problem is the messenger who is fiercely loyal is ALSO a Joe Biden type of Republican. Biden says what is on his mind before he calculates how it is going to be heard or who it will impact. He thinks it and then it is on the table.

How can you adhere to advance planning and the message of the day when the person who has the appearance of leading you saying what they believe to be true most of the time? It is a difficult problem to correct.

What power do the religious right have over the money men if they have outlived the advanced planning arm whose market has changed? The masters of universe can only stay in business if they are selling a product that most consumers want to buy. There are 15% of Americans who don't want to have anything to do with religion on the right or left. Their market share is increasing as well as the changing demographic focus of this great melting pot.
