Birther bill hits Congress

Rep. Bill Posey, a freshman Republican from Florida, introduced a bill yesterday mirroring proposed state legislation in Missouri and elsewhere that stems from fringe doubts about Obama's eligibility for office.

The full bill text isn't yet available, and Posey's spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, but here's a summary:

H.R. 1503. A bill to amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution; to the Committee on House Administration.

Though Posey's spokesman wasn't available, a Feb. 13 letter from Posey to a constituent on the subject appears on a website pushing the story in which Posey noted that courts and Hawaii officials had rejected the claims, but didn't state his own view on the subject.

1. This is Obama's Whitewater, I guess. They'll pick at this for as long as they can.
Wonder how much they'll spend before they come up with nothing?

They'll have to spend their OWN money, because Congress won't be authorizing any expenditures at this stage of the game.

11. OMG!
I hadn't thought of that, but what a way to manipulate the political process!!! This in itself is reason enough not to pass the bill. Surely those in charge will see the danger. :scared:

3. Cali! This is weird, I am surprised Posey, who otherwise seems kind of reasonable for a conservative
would do this.

What's the back story? That's what we want! Come on Politico, dig deeper!

4. I don't see a problem with this bill
Since Obama has already produced a legally valid birth certificate, all it would have done had it been passed before the election is make the birthers look even more insane, since he wouldn't have been able to even run without it. And passing it now just looks like a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

8. Agreed!
I think it would be funny to see the look on the birthers faces if this bill passes - and Obama meets the qualifications.

Of course, the die-hards will just claim THAT one is forged too...... *rolls eyes*

7. Why do we need this legislation if it's already in the Constitution and we've gotten along
for over 200 years with it? The Constitution doesn't require "other documentation."

This is a waste of the people's time and money. No person elected to Congress should be spending the taxpayers' dime on this. There are higher priorities, hello?

15. They should remodel Posey's office. Turn it into the sanitation room for maintenance.
