Full circle at Altgeld

Readers of Dreams for My Father will recall the Chicago housing project Altgeld Gardens as the site of Obama's rewarding, if frustrating and incremental, community organizing work.

Comes now, a reader points out, fodder for some industrious essayist: Mayor Daley plans (.pdf) to spend $30 million of the stimulus money is dedicated to the "comprehensive rehabilitation" of Altgeld and one other Chicago public housing project.

The cash from above is more or less the opposite of Alinskyite agitation from within, though it will no doubt be welcome.

(In any case, it's better symbolism than the initial local news report, now corrected, that the funding was going toward Altgeld's demolition.)
