Redoubt alert status raised after explosion

Mount Redoubt released a plume of steam and ash that rose three miles high Sunday afternoon, and geologists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory immediately upgraded volcano's aviation color code status to orange and its alert status to "watch."

>snip<

A team from the observatory flew to Mount Redoubt after the explosion was detected around 1 p.m. and observed steam still issuing from the volcano by mid-afternoon.

"The tremor is continuing, and that's why we're continuing to watch closely," Murray said. "The situation could evolve quickly."

Mount Redoubt is a 10,197-foot stratovolcano based on the west side of Cook Inlet, about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.

"Their legislation is larded with wasteful spending," Jindal said. "It includes ... $140 million for something called 'volcano monitoring.' Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C."

Alaskans fume over Jindal volcano-monitoring gripe

STIMULUS: Louisiana GOP governor's remarks roil Outside critics too.

By GEORGE BRYSON

In his official Republican response to President Barack Obama's speech to the nation Tuesday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said repeatedly that "Americans can do anything!"

With one exception, apparently. We don't need to keep an eye on simmering volcanoes.

Jindal singled out "volcano monitoring" as an unnecessary frill that Democrats stuck in the recently adopted stimulus package.

>snip<

"Volcano monitoring is a matter of life and death in Alaska," Democratic Sen. Mark Begich said in an open letter to Jindal.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski quickly agreed, noting in a press statement how "absolutely appropriate" it is to spend money on volcano monitoring.

2. Statement on Jindal by Vancouver WA Mayor Royce Pollard
"Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?" Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Washington, said on Wednesday. "We have one that's very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently."

3. Thanks for responding Steve...

I suppose Bobby Jindal will blow a fuse when he finds out that the Alaska Volcano Observatory just went to 24 hour manning.

AVO is monitoring the situation closely and the AVO operations center in Anchorage is now resuming 24 hour per day staffing.

From my deck in Anchorage (I live WAY up above the city), I can see a plume coming from Redoubt right now! It's beautiful to look at.. but I always worry about the residents down on the Kenai Peninsula (some who are DU'ers here)

It's 7:57 p.m. here, but it doesn't get dark here for another half hour or so..

If I can get a good photo of it in the morning, I'll post it on here.

18. *Chuckle*
Quite understand. Jindal's comments didn't fare very well in Seattle, where on a clear day you can see Mt Baker AND Mt Rainier.........

Actually, it's really hard to miss Mt. Rainier.

Blue dropped into the Alaska section here over the weekend, so hopefully she's at home in Anchorage.

This is a photo of the Kenai (Key-nie) Peninsula during one of Redoubt's previous uproars years ago:

Hopefully that thing will settle down and not continue to rumble..

or trees and wildlife were harmed....

Save the money from volcano monitoring and just buy everyone in the country a hat so the falling ash won't get in their hair.

Instead of complaining about the specks in the eyes of others, you should be looking at that big ol' pine tree you have lodged in your own eye first.
