CNN: Obama rating high (64%), 59% approve his handling of economy. "There's a lot of good will"
By Paul Steinhauser

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A national poll indicates that nearly two out of three Americans approve of the job President Obama's doing, but the survey suggests that people appear to be split on how he's handling some aspects of the economy.

President Obama may have some time on his hands in dealing with U.S. economic troubles, a new poll says.

Obama rating high, but poll finds worries on economy

Obama's job approval rating stands at 64 percent in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Monday. That rating is down 3 percentage points from mid-February.

When asked about the economy, 59 percent of respondents approve of how Obama's performing, with 40 percent disapproving.

"Most of the Americans who disapprove of Obama are Republicans," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director. "His approval rating is 59 percent among independents and over 90 percent among Democrats, but two-thirds of Republicans have a negative view of his actions in office so far."

Two out of three approve of how the president is helping the middle class, 64 percent give Obama a thumbs up on unemployment, 62 percent approve of how he's handling taxes, and 54 percent support him on the home foreclosure crisis.

But Americans appear to be split on how the president is dealing with the massive federal budget deficit, the problems facing the major U.S. automakers and the federal bailout of Wall Street and the major American banks. Video Watch a report on Obama's plan to boost small businesses »

"There's a lot of good will toward President Obama in this poll. Americans overwhelmingly hope he will succeed. They believe he will succeed, and they support his economic recovery program. But we're seeing growing doubt about some details," said Bill Schneider, a CNN senior political analyst.

1. The bar has been set at 100% for Obama
He needs to win over the hearts and minds of every person in the country or he's a failure.

2. It would be interesting to know what Republicans think should be done
Edited on Mon Mar-16-09 11:44 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
I mean, why isn't anybody asking them for THEIR plan? Oh, wait a minute, Boehner already stated that the Republicans aren't legislators anymore, just "communicators". Is CNN (or anybody else) planning to put out a poll on how people feel about their Republican representatives' plans to NOT do anything but "communicate" since they're in the minority. What about their plans to be like the Taliban- as one GOP Congresscritter suggested- or to run a "Shadow Presidency" like Jeb suggested? I guess it's o.k. for them and all the pundits (like David Broder) for the corporate whore media conglomerates to sit around and snipe at President Obama and his economic plans all day and ominously warn of his impending (un-)popularity but offer no viable alternatives to his proposed policies. I thought that the GOP won some concessions in the stimulus plan because...um.....they expressed themselves and President Obama actually listened to them and tried to incorporate their ideas into his stimulus plan. Of course, despite all of the concessions, all but 3 GOPers voted AGAINST the plan in the end. Or was I just dreaming?

WABOBS

The GOP and the corporate whore media conglomerates are quite simply foaming-at-the-mouth DESPERATE for President Obama and his administration to "fail" and will eagerly and slavishly report and accentuate any perceived "failures" and will simply not be satisfied IMHO until his polling numbers match those of Bush at the end of his (P)residency. Mark my words. The whole thing just makes me want to:

:puke:

4. Of course the GOP isn't coming up with any ideas
They believe that ANY plan is more likely than not going to fall short and there is nothing to be gained by offering any alternatives. Those alternatives would open the door for the GOP to be attacked the same way the administration's efforts are being constantly attacked.

So it's politically better for them to sit on the sidelines, throw up barriers to recovery and do everything in their power to point out any and every instance where the Obama policies fall short. It's really their only chance if they have any hope of not losing even more in 2010 and 2012.

Naturally, I think it will not work because the economy is likely to show just enough rebound and just quickly enough to keep the President's approval ratings from tanking. The administration has found its footing in repelling the attacks the last week or so... and the republicans have to be frustrated as hell that their fear-based, flag-draped, media-supported bile campaign is not making a dent in the country's support of President Obama.

6. Reality
Obama got elected with 53 percent of the vote. This means 11 percent that didn't vote for him approve of his overall performance.
And his economic approval Is still higher than his Elect numbers. This Is good news. The MSM will try to use this as saying people are
losing approval for him.Republicans want to keep the typical No spending tax cuts for the wealthy going.Which got us Into this
mess.

7. Good way of reframing the numbers
Edited on Mon Mar-16-09 12:46 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
Not that they don't look good otherwise but it's significant that President Obama and his ratings are higher than they were on Election Day 2008. To have won over 6-11% McCain/Republican support is nothing to complain about. I wonder if Bush could've said the same pre-9/11/01 in terms of increasing Democratic support? As I posted earlier, the Repukes and the corporate media whores are circling the wagons and just waiting to rip President Obama apart.

Interestingly, David Broder had a column in yesterday's paper with a similar meme about President Obama's high popularity numbers but growing concern about his economic policies. Hmmm......this must be the new "meme" making its rounds?

8. Look at Bloomberg's Version: Obama’s Approval Rating Slips in CNN Poll as Economy Takes Toll
Source: Bloomberg/CNN

March 16 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama’s approval ratings are slipping as Americans fret about the economy, a CNN poll found.

Obama’s approval rating declined to 64 percent in a March 12-15 survey conducted for CNN by Opinion Research Corp. That’s down from 76 percent in a Feb. 7-8 poll. The new president’s disapproval rating climbed to 34 percent from 23 percent.

9. 76 percent was an inflated number anyway....
as Gallup never had his rating above 68% EVER on Approval and that was right after Inauguration day.

Guess it is easy to artificially use a stratospheric number, and when one takes another poll (most likely using different questions) then claim that he has fallen can be used.

Don't put anything passed them. They work overtime to whore for the corporation....and service the uninformed public.

12. Who gives a shit? The point is that Obama has never had 76% approval rating,
although is favorability have been that high.

The point is that polls are not the boss of me,
and that polls are used to manipulate public opinion
via corporate media on a regular basis.....cause
this is what the media does best.

Even Right Wingers agree with that assessment,
although they only say that the corporate media is liberal
to attempt to get the corporate media to hit the Left even harder,
and yet have cover.

I'm with President Obama on his past statements
that he will not govern according to the polls....
and will be as he is when the polls are up,
and when the polls are done!

Apart from that, Welcome to DU!

13. MSNBC quoted a Pew Poll that says Obama "slipped below 60% for the first time to 59%."
Always looking for the negative.
