2. Any of those could fail
and the economy would keep on crankin'.

If AIG fails, the economic world ends.

By the simple virtue of AIG having its fingers in every pie, AIG is the largest monopoly in history.

5. I hate those jerks
They have screwed up more good lawsuit settlements with their "terms" than anyone else (they refuse to fund the settlement for 105 days at least - that way, they can play the float on the money committed to pay and make a little extra. I have had more than one reasonable settlement fall through, exposing my client (the insured) to much greater liability. Of course, in Texas, the Texas Supreme Court is so far bought off by the insurance companies that it would never dare rule against them.

The Catholic Church in the dark to middle ages was a far larger monopoly.

The US Gov't owns 80% of it. I highly doubt they are going to let AIG back out into the wild without massive changes.
