How do people feel about Sen. Grassley's suggestion that AIG execs should resign or kill themselves?
I find it kind of amusing, but it seems like a hollow sentiment to me. Does anybody find the remark offensive? Gutsy? Funny? Effective?
Just kind of curious. :hi:

3. I didn't find his remarks offensive, but I think resignation would be sufficient.
Suicide seems a little over the top.

5. I think they should get the Brazen Bull.
You know, the ancient Greek punishment where you got locked in a big bronze bull sculpture, then a fire was set underneath and you slowly roasted to death...

Think of it as a sacrifice to the stock market gods. In fact, I think that bronze bull sculpture at the New York Stock Exchange should be converted into a Brazen Bull.

Let the punishment fit the crime, I say.

9. Jesus, did he really say this?
If so, I find it more offensive than the usual stuff spewing from his mouth.

How innocent is congress over the years in allowing all of the deregulation of the banking industry, lining their pockets?

Grassley should join Dick Cheney and STFU.

10. I am unhappy that it was a republican

that had the balls to tell AIG executives to do the honorable thing as the Japanese do. The problem is these AIG people are too full of themselves and really a bunch of cowards...Disgourge them from all assets now!!

11. His point, which I agree with, was crystal clear to me - why don't the people who caused the
problems have any sense of shame. It is like that emotion disappeared. It really served a very useful purpose and we need it back.

24. nothing wrong with the night-shift in a bowling alley
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 11:04 PM by Two Americas
I don't know why we see the work of blue collar everyday people as undesirable when compared to whatever it is that executives do, or as making less of a contribution or as not as rewarding.

The problem is the impoverishment of those working the night-shift in the bowling alley, and the exploitation of all of us by the financial and insurance industries.

18. I don't like it...
for personal reasons. It's not funny, because sometimes when you say shit like that, people actually do commit suicide. When you read more, you find some execs want to give the entire bonus back, others at least half. I think the CEO needs to take responsibility and make it right. That's all. He doesn't have to kill himself. Perhaps resign and give the money back, or take it out of his own pocket.

But my uncle killed himself because of a bad business deal thing, so I'm not a huge fan of it for personal reasons. I wasn't horribly offended though. I thought the "sucking on the tit" thing was funny .

32. I think most people understand that he was making a point about their shamelessness,
their absolute lack of honor.

Of course, the hopelessly literal got all indignant, but I think most people know that Grassley did not really urge these executives to commit suicide.

34. Grassley's been know to say (and think) some pretty ridiculous things
One of my fav's:

"You know what? What makes our economy grow is energy. And Americans are used to going to the gas tank (sic), and when they put that hose in their, uh, tank, and when I do it, I wanna get gas out of it. And when I turn the light switch on, I want the lights to go on, and I don't want somebody to tell me I gotta change my way of living to satisfy them. Because this is America, and this is something we've worked our way into, and the American people are entitled to it, and if we're going improve (sic) our standard of living, you have to consume more energy."

37. I have no problems. Of course, even on DU, there will be those "Where I live, no-one can SURVIVE...
on less than 100K a year/So 250K is really middle class" people from the Upper West Side or Marin County who will chime in with an alternate view.

Rich Liberation! Yeah! If we buy wear Birkenstocks and eat organic, we're a new kind of 21st-century rich people -- good ones! :eyes:
