CBS Poll: Obama at 64% approval, 54% still confident in Geithner

snip

"(CBS) For the first time since he became president, a significant number of Americans are expressing disapproval of Barack Obama’s actions in a specific area: His handling of the AIG bonus situation.

Despite the middling reviews for his handling of the bonuses, however, the president continues to get high marks overall for his job performance and his handling of the economy.

Forty-two percent of those surveyed disapprove of the president’s handling of the AIG bonuses, while roughly the same percentage - 41 percent - approve. Another 17 percent don’t know or aren’t sure.

Yet President Obama’s overall job performance rating appears unaffected by the AIG fallout. Sixty-four percent approve of the president’s performance, roughly the same as last week.

And ratings for the president’s handling of the overall economy are actually up slightly: Sixty-one percent now approve, up from 56 percent last week.

The poll numbers can be explained in part by the fact that most Americans do not think there was much the Obama administration could have done about the bonuses. Only 12 percent think the administration had a lot of control over the payouts, while more than half say the administration had little or no control. "

On Secretary Geithner:

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/03/23/business/econwatch/entry4887175.shtml

"According to the poll, 54 percent of Americans have at least some confidence in Geithner, though only 13 percent say that have a lot of support him.

On the flip side, 15 percent say they have no confidence in Geithner.

As can be expected, views on this are decidedly partisan: Republicans express less confidence than Democrats."

2. Who's poll numbers do you think all of the cable chatter channel
are going to use to attempt to erode Obama's numbers even more, right before Budget time?

I hope folks here will be really happy!

PUMA Krugman on all of the channels being a little rat...with some cheese!

3. Exactly. Remember the week before the election?
Zogby had a poll showing Obama tied with McCain and their DAILY SAMPLE had McCain up.

The talking heads used that over and over and over again until the poll reversed itself and Obama retook the lead for good.

I even remember the NY Post running it on their front page.

4. His job approval was 62% last week, so he's actually up 2. this agrees with Gallup in the last few
days. A few point increase following Leno.
Zogby is full of shit. As usual. But I expect the MSM to blast his poll all day tomorrow.

7. The "idiot talking heads" got it twisted. I think the American people
have decided that they're on teevee too much, and I couldn't agree more. Recommended.

10. Sounds good to me.
I'd be happier if someone else had been picked for Treasury Secretary, but I think nothing good comes from having Obama with a low approval rating. I don't agree with how this economic mess is being handled so far, but I want Obama to continue to have solid majority backing of the public, especially for his other priorities.
