Yeah, CNN - Link, Please?
Being as I am addressing the folks over to the CNN, I am going to talk … very … very ... slowly, and avoid the use of multi-syllabic words as much as is humanly possible.

You see, guys, out here in this series of tubes known as the internetz, there are certain rules and procedures one adheres to – the most important being that if someone challenges a position you’re taking, or a statement you’ve made, you will be asked to provide a “link” that will take the reader to something that factually supports your argument, or demonstrates the consistency of your stance.

Got it? Good … now let’s proceed.

Following President Obama’s press conference tonight, I had my intellect yet again assaulted by The Best Political Team on Television, aka the usual hacks who lounge around in front of the camera, occasionally opining on the actual news during those sad and lonely times when a white female teenager hasn’t gone missing on vacation, thereby freeing you from the humdrum duty of discussing something of real importance.

Now, I’m sure you would agree that it would seem totally unfair and unbalanced were you CNN folk to have just taken up this “Keeping Them Honest” meme during the tenure of President Barack Obama (D) – that’s D as in Democrat – and I just know you wouldn’t do that.

The problem I’m having here is that I don’t seem to remember you being all over Bush’s ass during the Worst.Presidency.In.History.

But I just know I must be wrong.

So I’m wondering if your crack research department could provide some links to the following footage of the “Best Political Team on Television discussing the following:

Bush wages two outrageously expensive wars while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans – how can we afford this?

Bush administration plunges nation deeper into debt – how will this affect our future economic picture?

Bush team turns blind eye to lack of regulation of financial institutions – is it remotely possible that something could go very, very wrong here?

Bush continues vacation while NOLA drowns – is this pResident out of touch with reality?

Bush’s approval ratings continue to plummet – are we seeing the first signs of a “one termer” here?

Bush WH operates shrouded in secrecy – doesn’t the citizenry have a right to know what’s going on?

Bush clears brush in Crawford and hosts barbecue for insiders – is this pResident trying to accomplish too much at once?

Bush speaks at presser without knowing what he’s talking about – or was he just trying to “duck” the questions?

Bush talks about “putting food on your family” – is he misreading the teleprompter, or do we have a fuckin’ idiot running the country?

Bush’s approval ratings tank again – is the “honeymoon” over?

Bush says “we don’t torture”, all readily available evidence to the contrary – good thing we, CNN, are investigating and presenting the facts to the American people.

Bush admin deletes WH emails, imprisons enemy combatants without charge or trial, “outs” covert CIA operative, delivers no-bid contracts to companies with ties to admin insiders, fails to question billings of war-profiteering corporations, ignores Geneva Conventions, hands out taxpayer funds to compliant/supportive religious organizations who delivered votes from the “Christian Right”, kow-tows to Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Business with tax breaks and subsidies, and touts “keeping the nation safe” after allowing the worst attack on American soil in history to actually happen, having ignored the intelligence that warned of its imminence – thank God we, the “Best Political Team on Television” are keeping ‘em honest.

Links, please?

Thanks in advance – oh, and once you provide the links to this coverage, which I just know was dogged and relentless (despite the fact that I can’t remember it), I’ll have a few thousand more “link” requests. Hope you don’t mind.

And, hey, while I’ve got your attention, just wanted to add a comment about the Word Cloud – nice touch. Glad to know your graphics department is still fully staffed and funded, and able to come up with the kind of informative “news” the nation is clamouring for.

Too bad you obviously had to let your “journalists” go – which, as I do seem to recall, you actually had once upon a time in the very distant past.

I guess it’s just a sign of these difficult economic times – which, by the way, are all President Obama’s fault.

I'm on CNN's Ignore list. When I try to send them an email, I get a prompt informing me that they are not accepting responses from me.

I guess I sent them one too many "Is your comment negative? - yes, you're damned fuckin' real it's negative" posts.

And this rant especially because it points out something they do not want to know...that they are a propaganda organization not a news source.
Great post.

32. My theory on "is your comment negative?"
They don't actually read the comments. They just let them drop into two different bins--positive and negative--and at the end of the day they do a count. That way, no pesky substantive thought is involved. Kinda like the nice voice machine answering lady who asks you to speak very clearly with simple answers when you're trying to get through to a real live human bean.
I have no doubt that CNN is pissed that Ed Henry got his ass handed to him. (Gee, if I were Obama, I would have PAID him to ask that question!!)
And yes, I too fondly remember Bernard Shaw, and Peter Arnett and (vaguely) John Holliman.. Those were the days when REAL REPORTERS did things like ACTUALLY REPORT WHAT WAS GOING ON...like, from under a desk in Baghdad.
Sigh.
Loved your rant, Nancy. It pretty much covers everything.

51. Marching orders ..................
All right, duers, you have your marching orders.

Summing up - bear with me - all of us have about 10 billion brain cells. Most of us use a few hundred thousand of them. Nance uses about 9 1/2 billion of hers. They are always sitting on go and she can summon them at will. I suspect she uses the other half-billion or so to 'smell the roses' while having morning coffee. And I am exceedingly glad about that. I don't want her to self-destruct. We need her. We need her.

Now, the marching orders. The questions she asks in this open letter to CNN are to the point. And they must be asked of every MSM outlet. Again and again.

Duers, you are hereby ordered to make this go viral. Forward her questions to everyone on your email list. Print them out and snail mail to MSM outlets.
Those of you with 'video' talent, YouTube is waiting for your submission.

Thank you, Nance, we have your back. You are on the National Treasure List and please take care of yourself - we cannot afford to lose a single asset when it comes to keeping the crimes and other shenanginans of the Bush Crime Family OUT THERE! God bless.

WSJ editorial following CNN's admission that they had kowtowed to Saddam Hussein to cover up atrocities:

http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110003336

How refreshing that they came forward after Saddam's overthrow to express their relief at being able to again fulfill their journalistic potential.

Now, if they would just have the same decency to admit their docile submission to another recently overthrown regime, we might be able to accept their "Keeping Them Honest" slogan as a new beginning instead of blatant hypocrisy.

27. Well stated
Still, I see another layer to the issue of the media, one that concerns me far more than the fact that the MSM has turned to shit over the recent years.

Namely, the media is a service, a service for the masses. The decomposition of journalism and the composting of proper public discussion isn't so much the "fault" of the media, as it is an indicator of the state of the public. The society as such is devolving into a pit of drooling drones who can sustain their existence on whining and corn syrup. The media business (and it is a business, in the end) simply answers the call with appropriate programming.

That's what truly makes me sick, the fact that the noble revolutions and popular uprisings of centuries past were all for naught when the consumer generation is all too eager to bend over for the corporate lords, all simply to avoid having to think about any issue more complex than the directions to the closest burger joint.

When my forefathers were robbed of their civil liberties, they grabbed pitchforks and torches and took them back with interest. With the modern economy collapsing, I can only hope for those times to come again. Time to storm the Bastille once more, and redefine the direction for the future.

48. Apparently it hurts too much for some
people to deal with. I remember when I finally had it with CNN, back in the spring of 2005.. It was during the whole "runaway bride" nonsense, when Jennifer whats-her-name went missing the week before her wedding and the press was going nuts over it. Well, it turned out that she hadn't been kidnapped or abducted or anything, but had cut and dyed her hair and taken a bus out of town 'cause she couldn't deal with the wedding. You'd think that'd be the end of it, right? Wrong! That Friday night, the night before the wedding, the fiance and the family discovered the truth and were trying to get her to come home. Saturday morning, she finally agreed to do so and scheduled a flight back home.

From 5 in the morning, when they showed the family and fiance getting up and trying to decide what to do with all the fancy-schmancy wedding preparations at the fancy-schmancy house, it was nonstop coverage, and I do mean NON-FUCKING-STOP. The thing is, though, that day there were several coordinated attackes against American troops all throughout Iraq and Iraq was, literally, in flames, with many troop deaths. But you'd never have known it from the schlock bullshit on CNN. It wasn't even a real "missing person" case, she wasn't even in any danger at all. It was more like watching the "True Stories" or "True Romance" channel or a really bad Lifetime miniseries; it was just unfuckingbelievable. They even had a reporter on the plane with her returning home. THAT was when I finally had it with CNN.

42. I agree...the truth hurts
It's one thing to be concerned about a missing (white, often blonde, very pretty) teenaged girl, but quite another to be constantly. reporting. on. it. every. minute. of. the. day.

Viewpoints and opinions from everyone from the Chief of Police in Podunkville, Anystate to psychics who just know she's out there someplace trying to get back home. All day long.

But wait...it doesn't start to get disgusting until we stop and think...

When was the last time that much time was spent on little missing black girls (or boys, for that matter)? What...black children don't disappear? Hispanic kids don't get kidnapped?

It would be nice if neither of those things happened, but we all know that's not true.

So when was the last time CNN spent as much time reporting on the disappearance of a little black child as they have on, for example, Natalee Holloway?

You know very well that pipi_k was simply bringing up race as an example to show the broader scope of the MSM tunnelvision when it comes to deciding which stories get on the air and for how long.

Either say that you agree with CNN 24/7 coverage of a missing pretty teenager (white or not) while other important stories (that make BushCo. look bad) are exploding all around or STFU.

Yes it is a personal tragedy for that one particular family, but do you think that even THEY want to see their missing child plastered on their TV every time they turn it on?

39. President Obama bashing was tied between CNN & Fox with Oreilly & Rove
Question: Where in the hell was the media during the Bush mis-administration? WHERE?

Ed Henry was bashing him also in that so call "unbiased" reporter's take on the press conference. I so enjoyed our President's response to that slimeball during the press conference.

60. Back in the Bush days, they would say things like "He spoke forcefully ..."
"He didn't mangle the language too badly" (this is mine, but you get the point)

All softball analysis, even when Bush had a receiver box on his back and a feed in his ear to help him get through the press conference.

Not fair, but MSM is owned by Republicans and their enablers, so what else should we expect.

49. wish I could rec more than once.
Great statement on the sorry state of that cable "news" channel.

I wish people would boycott them until they get back to where they once were.

If they can't get MSNBC in their cable or satellite package, just go back to the networks. Not that MSNBC is the gold standard by any means. But they appear to by trying to report news. Which is more than I can say about CNN.

Whenever I turn to that channel they are having an ad anyway. So I rarely stay.

More and more I'm gravitating to PBS for my news. They have for-real, grown-up journalists and the time to really report the news.

Obama's election victory was number one but barely edged out Heath Ledger's death at number two. And the rest of the top ten are similar. It is really and truly sad.

It states:

"The articles on this site were first published by Democratic Underground or appeared first on Nance's DU Journal. If you're sick and tired of one-party misrule in America, please consider joining DU. And donate if you can."

====

The line "one-party misrule" should be reconsidered now that we have a Republican President and Congress.

No politician -- not one -- should be given a free ride. Yes, they should have asked all those questions you mentioned. Every one. Every day.

But, they also should be busting Obama on his decisions, too. Ask the tough questions. Piss him off every now and then. That's why we have a press.

I'm glad they finally found their voice.

70. Oh yeah.. but Bush refused to hold REAL press conferences, when he held them at all.
He holds the record for not holding live press conferences, precisely for that reason. And the corporate lap-dog media was complicit in this.. sitting by their fax machines salivating like Pavlov's dogs, waiting for their next stenography project. Frankly, I think the talking heads and "pundits" aka Chuck Todd, should NOT be in the press conferences, because he is not the press. He's an entertainer, just like Limbaugh. If they only allowed real journalists, think of the money they could save on those conferences. Heck they could hold it in the Oval Office, for the lack of real journalists around anymore.

78. You are really wrong here-
CNN has never employed journalists.
Unless you mean "servile and subservient corporate hacks", in which case you would be correct.

Make no mistake about this: the purpose of corporate owned media is to make money for corporations, with the hopeful side effect of keeping the population out of the public arena.

Aside from that, great post! :)

The thing is I am not one of the viewers they still have left. I abandoned CNN years ago.

The only time I see it now is a night like last night, when they are carrying the President's press conferences, speeches, etc.

Each time I tune-in, I am truly horrified at how much lower they've sunk since the last time I watched something on their network, which might have been merely a matter of weeks ago.

The "Word Cloud" was an absolutely stunning demonstration of just how low the bar is now set.

The press should have to face the public at least once a year in a forum to defend the stories they clog the airwaves with.
We had that here in Canada once, a long time ago it seems, where newscasters sat in front of an town hall type of audience and took questions from them and by phone.

I was so happy last night when the President let that reporter have it. Rare flash of anger that I was glad to see - the media will jump all over you if you let them. It's obvious that instead of journalists, they have out of touch aristocrats who serve their corporate masters.

If they were this hard on Bush, I'd just say they were a tough media. But they were not.
