"The Media’s ‘Obama Is Overexposed’ Meme Is Undercooked"
The Media’s ‘Obama Is Overexposed’ Meme Is Undercooked

Over the past week, there's been a lot of talk about Barack Obama's exposure to the public and the media. He's appeared on Leno, he's appeared on 60 Minutes, and after last night's snoozefest of a prime-time press conference, some are left wondering if this kind of marathon charm offensive is going to wear thin. Yesterday on The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck cautioned that it feels like the "he's on the campaign again." We've heard similar warnings of overexposure from the Daily News' Mike Lupica, CBS' Chris Wragge, and Meghan McCain, of all people.

According to Chuck Todd and friends, Obama's continued high job-approval polls can be taken (and certainly are by the White House) as a sign that these public appearances go over well with the public. Instead of staying quiet in a week when critics were calling the AIG-bonuses snafu his "Hurricane Katrina" moment (seriously? People died), Obama was plainly trying to have his voice — and side — heard. And so far, people are still listening.

But you already knew that, didn't you. :)

2. Here's my theory on this whole thing....
Obama is going straight to the public. When he does this, the media has a harder time spinning their storyline. And people can decide for themselves when they hear it straight from obama. The media doesn't like the fact that obama is going over them and going straight to the people. Cutting out the middle man. Middle men never like that.

4. Another example of great minds thinking alike!
Wrote this over the weekend:

Your real problem is that you resent Obama being so successful without you--he's...becoming popular enough to either pick his own media favorites (like calling on the Huffington Post at the last TV presser) or dispose of you altogether. After eight years of acting as Bush's gatekeepers and interpreters, you MSM-ers are suddenly an endangered species...(I)f Obama is getting too overexposed, maybe press conferences is what he ought to stop doing!

5. bingo
The msm is increasingly irrelevent. They're starting to pick up on that. Just this past weekend, some pundit or other had the gall to say that we the people won't be able to "understand" information if it isn't 'splained to us by the msm.

They're desperate. You can almost smell the fear through the teevee.

15. No, because it means they have to actually work.

Instead of just reading off the right-wing talking points that get faxed to them every morning, they actually have to think for themselves or look like the fools they are. This makes them mighty upset.

It was so much easier when they could just pretend everything Karl Rove said was right.

8. Loved this from your article:
I guess no one is used to what a real president should be doing...

It's not even that Obama is trying to earn the obvious positives that come with campaign-style selling of his positions (which no doubt he is). It's that he's doing very basically what a president should do — explaining the problems facing the country to a nervous public, going above and beyond to appear like he knows what he's doing, and trying to make his decisions as transparent as possible. If it smells at all of desperation, consider the context: For the past eight years we had a president notorious for opaque governing. George Bush wouldn't address the country even in times of need, and when he did, his answers to questions in press conferences were often simple, evasive, and even touchy. After that, of course it seems like Obama is going above and beyond the call of duty with a handful of candid appearances.

10. Rec'd~ I get
really pissed about elizabeth hasslebeck whining on The View about Obama like she'd ever have an opinion that wasn't straight from the hatemouth of sean hannity.

"Campaigning"? Just because Obama doesn't hide from the AMerican people like her beloved bush hiding under his bed doesn't mean the people who can think for themselves don't want to see their President Obama talking about his solutions:patriot::fistbump:

It's a good thing I don't work on The View.

11. the Main$tream media
is in a tizzy, Obama sidestepped them to go directly to the people. No filtering. No Middleman, no fuss.

I like watching them cry as much as listening to the GOP cry in the wilderness.

13. Isn't this a little like a painter blaming the model?
I mean, the man can't be overexposed without them doing their part. If they don't like there being so much Obamatude, then who'll be the first one to show old Law and Order reruns instead of his latest press conference? Anyone? Someone? I tohught not.

17. They're still adjusting, after 8 years of Dim Son...
spending 25% of his term clearing brush. Never holding press conferences. Scripting the hell out of every public appearance.

A president who likes to speak to the people, and who actually can speak, is a big change.
