Harry Reid on Bayh and Blue Dogs: "...leave them alone"
Reid To Critics Of ‘Moderate’ Democrats: You’re ‘Very Unwise And Not Helpful’ :

“I think it’s very unwise and not helpful,” Reid said Friday morning. “These groups should leave them alone. It’s not helpful to me. It’s not helpful to the Democratic Caucus.”

31. He appears to be sticking up for Blue Dogs instead of standing with Obama & his supporters.
Maybe he thinks it is a good strategy to characterize those who voice support for Obama's moderate budget plans as "extreme" and "liberal"- but I disagree.

DLC, Blue Dogs- who cares? Matters not to me what certain DEMS call themselves this week- I just think Reid should be doing all he can to fight for Obama's budget instead of bad mouthing those who voice support for it.

Seems like his job should be to drum up support for the President, as opposed to attacking Obama's supporters.

39. how would that make him a DLC member?
The DLC and the Blue Dogs are two distinct caucuses. He's not a member of either. Facts are facts.

17. I don't believe it is unwise. I definitely think it is helpful.
These ConservaDems want to express themselves, right? They have made their voices heard on the other side of the fence.

Now we are responding to their self expression. I don't think we should ever say: You are either with us or against.

I think the scrutiny of their voting history and political contributions are relevant. They have a right to speak out against any excesses or lack of pragmatism in the Obama administration. We have a right to figure out where their pragmatism leads us.

21. I am not a fan of the Blue Dogs, but is it remotely possible
that this group was created at the request of Obama and/or Reid for the purpose of giving the appearance of checks and balances, after eight years of Republicans rubber stamping Bush? It seems that anytime a party has control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency, they lose seats in the mid-term election. Could this be a clever way to combat that?

I was quick to think they were going to obstruct the President's agenda, but they were so quick to deny that and voice their "full support" of his agenda. If they fully support the President's agenda, why form a ConservaDem group? Are they full of shit, or is this another one of Obama's clever "rope-a-dope" strategies?

24. Obama overask, blue dogs tap down on request keeping the most important parts...
...Obama gets exactly what he wants (like he did when he asked for 750 billion in "stimulus" and got 798) and blue dogs looks good going back to their states\districts touting their control.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the play

27. No, it's not remotely possible
These folks were Bush enablers who formed a group to get the most extreme judges in the history of America put on the federal bench (among other things).

They're every bit as damaging- actually more dmaging to progressive values and policies than Republicans are.

33. Not likely, because it wouldn't do any good.
Because the right wing media will label anybody calling themselves a "Democrat" as "liberal" regardless of whether their voting record supports that label or not. I've even heard Evan W. Bayh himself referred to as a "liberal" on FAUX noize, despite how ridiculous that is.

So from the distorted right wing perspective, every DLC'er and Blue Balled "democrat" is a "liberal". They make no distinction between Feingold or Feinstein.

30. Reid needs to stand behind our President and stop attacking people who voice support for Obama.
Edited on Fri Mar-27-09 05:04 PM by Dr Fate
I thought the role of the Majority Leader was to keep Senators in line, not to join dissenting, conservative senators in attacking support for the President.
