"I liked how Obama brought those troops home"
Seriously, someone just said this to me as if he went back on his word. The whole basic convo:

her-"I liked how Obama brought those troops home. Sending 4,00---"
me-"No, no, no. He's been saying more troops in Afghanistan since last year."
her- (She shakes her head no)
me- "I can show you a video if you'd like"
her- "Oh, I don't care. Why would you bring them off if you're just going to send them back."
me- "Uh, 9/11?"

That was it, nothing really confrontational about it. We stopped before anybody got angry. It did prove one thing though-- these people have no idea what the man even said before they voted against him. Then, they put words in his mouth and expect him to live up to it.

The most troubling part of this is that the woman just got a new job as a substitute teacher. This is who is teaching our fucking kids.

3. My apologies.
I certainly don't mean every teacher or teachers in general. I'm just amazed that people with that kind of thought process can be able to substitute a class. Not even because of the political difference, just that this person is the type to open their mouth about something that they have no clue about.

14. I always found substitute teachers to be better than the regulars
Sorry, just my personal experience in a multitude of schools. The best teachers I ever had were Catholic school teachers who were paid far less than public-school teachers...and they didn't care, because teaching was more important to them than money. I recently visited that school, 20 years after graduating, and nearly all my former teachers are still there.

Right now, this school is in dire financial straits. Those teachers suggested (not agreed to, but suggested) a freeze on their salaries for the next three years, so the school can survive. Their dedication is incredible. :patriot:

If we had more teachers like these, kids would actually look forward to going to school. :)

4. The fact that he is escalating Afghanistan is nothing to crow about.
Go ahead, correct them & tell how great it is that you were right, he's sending them to Afghanistan instead. Happy day, you are right!

The conversation had nothing to with whether or not that I thought sending more troops is the right thing to do. That's a very debatable issue that will continue to divide a lot of us and a completely separate from this.

It had everything to do with putting words in his mouth and expecting him to live up to them.

11. Did someone seriously piss in your Cornflakes this morning?
The conversation, nor my thread, had any intention of showing me 'pwning' a debate. I even stated that it wasn't a heated discussion. It was a post to show that these people had no idea of what he even said and because of that, they set him up with impossible standards.

As I said before, you being butt-hurt over his military action is another topic. Go cry somewhere else.

I suspect that if your so-called friends knew that you were reducing them to "Obamites" and gagging whenever they express an opinion, you'd have fewer friends.

13. WTF?
"really meant"?

To know what the President "really meant" all you have to do is listen to what he said during the campaign, and now as President, and read what he has written.

Duh!

28. And what makes you think that I am not in a school almost every day? ............
Trust me, I spend plenty of time in schools and it's amazing what gets discussed in teachers lunges and break rooms when certain people aren't around. I recently held a Q&A with high school history classes, in between sessions I would often go to the teachers lounge to grab a quick soda or just to stretch my legs with a quick walk, and I found it amusing how certain teachers would put their views away when another teacher entered.

I often find the teachers to be similar to the students. They have their cliques and mini groups with those that they agree with. The only difference is that they are nice and cordial towards those they disagree with when they are face to face, but talk behind their back when they are gone. Students tend to be openly hostile and much more honest about their dislike of certain peers.

Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 08:06 AM by undeterred
he had spoken out against the war in Iraq from the getgo and she did not. Turns out it wouldn't have made any difference which of them we nominated. Talk is cheap. A slow withdrawal from Iraq and an escalation in Afghanistan was not what antiwar voters were hoping for.

32. Obama was upfront about his view on Afghanistan. I don't understand why some people are .........
so surprised.

Iraq is a different story, but he was also honest about that. He stated upfront that it might not be possible to withdraw troops immediately, but he does have a plan in place that is supported by the military.

31. Seems some people weren't paying attention?
I have a link going back to July of last year where Obama the candidate said that the troops in Afghanistan are going to need some help.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/14/us/politics/14campaign.html?ref=politics

I dunno...maybe it's just me, but it seems like reasonable adults who are paying attention would see that and read between the lines...the war in Afghanistan isn't going to end soon.

I know there are plenty of other anti-war people here (as I am myself). I do not like the idea or the realities of war. But come on, people...where were you when he said that?

People can blame Obama, but once the field of candidates had been narrowed down, what other choices did we realistically have?

Geez, I'm not even all that politically astute, and even I could guess that the war in Afghanistan wasn't going to get any better.
