Despite the royal comforts of Air Force One, a fleet of helicopters, a $300,000 limousine and more than 500 aides (plus 200+ Secret Service agents) to attend to every need, it is still tough to envy President Barack Obama's jam-packed first official trip abroad this week.
This is no backpacking-across-Europe trek to find yourself. This looks like hard work. Consider the President's to-do list:
* Solve global economic crisis in London with leaders of 20 major and developing nations.
* Also in London, knock heads with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
* Go to France and give a speech on the U.S.-Atlantic alliance (in other words, tell the French how important they are - probably the easiest job of his trip).
* Stop over in Germany to persuade reluctant NATO officials that outsiders really can subdue the hostiles in Afghanistan.
* In the Czech Republic, give a speech to persuade developing nations that nuclear proliferation is totally a bad thing.
* Court Muslims in Turkey and start convincing their counterparts around the globe to like Americans, starting with an old fashioned campaign-style roundtable with students.
After a trip like that, Obama could use a week at Camp David before getting back to the drudgery of bailing out U.S. banks and putting unemployed Americans back to work.
