HALFMOON, N.Y., March 28 -- Businessman Bruce Tanski is a die-hard Republican, and he has long planned to support the GOP candidate in Tuesday's special election for a vacant U.S. House seat.
But the past month of campaigning has included a barrage of negative television ads from the candidates, the national political parties and various interest groups on both sides, and it has left Tanski feeling turned off.
"The campaign's been nasty, as far as I'm concerned," said Tanski, 59, seated at his restaurant, Snyder's. "They're on all the time. I get sick of it -- every channel. I'll be glad when it's over."
As he was speaking, another attack ad appeared on a television mounted on the restaurant's wall.
A congressional race in this sprawling, largely rural district of Upstate New York would not normally attract much attention outside the state. But the circumstances of this election are far from normal.
