US to seek a seat on UN rights council

By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

(03-31) 13:18 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

The State Department says the United States will seek election to the U.N. Human Rights Council, the Obama administration's latest reversal of President George W. Bush's foreign policies.

The department says the Obama administration wants to participate in the council's activities as part of a new era of U.S. engagement with the world.

The Bush administration boycotted the council over its repeated criticism of Israel and failure to comment on flagrant rights abuses elsewhere, including Sudan.

The Geneva-based council was created in 2006 to replace its predecessor, the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, which was widely seen as ineffective.

This is good news.

What a grand idea. Lend credibility to the collection of barbaric savages that dominate that body.

Oh, wait, the USA has no credibility anymore.

Never mind.

Reached Tuesday, Bolton denounced the Obama administration’s decision. “This is like getting on board the Titanic after it’s hit the iceberg,” he said. “This is the theology of engagement at work. There is no concrete American interest served by this, and it legitimizes something that doesn’t deserve legitimacy.”

Exactly why The Obamageddon did this I’m sure!

That applies to the Obama Administration as well as the UN Human Rights Council.

Since there is no criticism of Islam allowed on the council Obama will fit right in.

Obama just wants to be able to cry out: “You like me. You really like me.”

Seems to me, in addition to lending the committee more credibility, it effectively silences the U.S. from speaking out in public against the committee’s decisions. The response would be, I believe, “hey, you were part of the deliberations, you had a chance to say your peace and you got voted down; are you against democracy now?” Dumb idea but, like you, I don’t believe Obama decided this from ignorance. Can’t have the United States publicly criticizing his cousin, can we?

9. Why do they hate the UN so much?
Is it because it represents everthing Bush didn't, like human rights, treaties, all the things that hampered his mandate to pillage and torture?
