OFFS! MSNBC 9am Second Story is "Did Mrs. Obama violate protocol..."
"when she wrapped her arm around the Queen of England?"

I'm getting very tired of this b.s.

3. Wait...didn't the Queen hug her first....
What am I talking about, since when did the media let facts get in the way of a good "scandal"?

4. Wow really, Queen Liz hugged first?

I just didn't picture Liz and Phil as touchy, feely types. :)

10. And then reportedly said...
"Now that we met, let's do keep in touch"

Apparently the Queen was quite taken with Michelle

15. It IS against protocol to embrace the Royals.
Remember the mini-flap that occurred when Nancy Reagan put her hand on Princess Diana's back as she welcomed her into the White House? And Diana flinched?
I certainly do, thinking at the time that it was a pretty silly thing. There was a great tut tutting from the British press corps...and the Americans picked it up.
Now I am certainly NOT proposing we have a pity party for Nancy Reagan....and I'm thrilled at the way the Obamas win everybody over. It seems that only the American talking heads have complained this time....The British press corps seems absolutely smitten. The Queen looks pretty happy too
More evidence of how utterly irresistible the Obamas are.

(I posted a comment about this in the photo thread just a few minutes ago. Sorry for the repetition.)

22. Not if THE ROYAL INITIATES IT!
Proper protocol is to reciprocate the gesture.

I read that here in a thread somewhere, I think it's nice to show compassion and just being nice to someone.

The Queen has protocol, Mrs. Obama has proto-cool.

11. It may be a "blessing". Normal people are thinking "WTF!!".
I think it's way less than 20% who give a shit about this criticism. Even for those of the remaining 80% who are pre-disposed to be negative toward the Obamas, this kind of petty crap from the media looks bad for the media. It only matters to the truly crazy.

12. Well, Liz has seniority in terms of titular head of a failed empire.
I suppose she is entitled to some defference on the basis of something in there somewhere.

So I say she should be treated as you would an 83 year old host to a dinner party. Give her a smile and a hug and an IPod.

17. Yesterday I called this out and many DUers ridiculed me. . .
. . .evidently my mistakenly calling Obama the leader of the free world upset some, but let's be honest this whole royal protocol thing is bullshit.

19. The Brits are FLABBERGASTED over this!!!!!!
It seems, the Queen initiated it, so by putting her hand on the Queen's back after the Queen initated the sentiment Michelle Obama followed protocol precisely.

The Brits are flabbergasted over it because they've never seen this side of their queen. They LOVE IT!

The palace says "no breach of protocol" regarding Michelle Obama

"Inside Edition" called up the Palace to ask about this hubbub that Michelle Obama dare touch the Queen - a big royal no-no that has all blogs and cables talking.

However, it's no big deal, the Palace says.

“It’s obvious that it was a mutual sign of affection and appreciated between the Queen and Michelle Obama,” a spokesperson for the Queen told "Inside Edition."

“There is no offense. The reception was an informal occasion. There's no breach of protocol.”

And the advice from Buckingham Palace for future encounters? “The only recommendation is that you do what you would naturally feel in that environment.”
