Nebraska city rejects Stimulus money
North Platte rejects stimulus dollars

A North Platte housing agency apparently is the first entity in Nebraska to turn down federal stimulus money.

The agency rejected $588,012 to fix up public housing in the west-central Nebraska community.

"We didn't want to spent taxpayer dollars just because it was available to spend,'' said Ed Rieker, board chairman of the North Platte Housing Authority. "We have a board that's very fiscally conservative and a board that takes its responsibility of being public servants very seriously.''

Rieker said he didn't support the stimulus plan advanced by President Barack Obama. He said the housing authority had already allocated its own money for sidewalk, fence and driveway replacement projects being considered for the stimulus money.

If it wasn't for Union Pacific, they'd dry up and blow away.

3. If they already have funds for those projects, then that's the right thing to do.
If they're trying to make a political statement at the expense of jobs, that's obviously not the right thing to do.

6. The general idea, Mr Reiker, is that by accepting the stimulus money
you are then freeing up the other money to employ MORE people on OTHER projects as well.

That's why it's called a "stimulus" package.

7. Not surprised. A lot of these people hate the air the President
breathes. They can send that money to Michigan. It can be used there for sure.

8. Okay -- now, reject farming subsidies!
Go on, I'll hold my breath while waiting.

(...turning blue...)

The ONLY time that these "fiscal conservatives" ever reject federal money is when the funds are intended to help poor people.
