Oscar de la Renta has tough words for Michelle Obama
Oscar de la Renta has tough words for Michelle Obama

(CNN) – Michelle Obama's fashion choices at the G20 summit have drawn widespread praise, but at least one famous designer thinks the fist lady made a major faux pas in her wardrobe choice for a private audience with Queen Elizabeth II.

"You don't…go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater," Oscar de la Renta told Woman's Wear Daily regarding Mrs. Obama's decision to wear a cardigan over an Isabel Toledo-designed dress for the private meeting.

De la Renta also said the first lady — who often sports relatively affordable American brands — should broaden her wardrobe and seize an opportunity to spur the flailing fashion industry.

“American fashion right now is struggling,” he said. “I think I understand what are doing, but I don’t think that is the right message at this particular point."

"I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only," he added.

12. She didn't wear a cardigan to meet the Queen, I believe. She wore a silk dress with silk overcoat.
She took the matching silk coat off at some point and was wearing just the white/black silk sleeveless dress.

I THINK that's what I saw in the pics.

She wore a cardigan to speak at the girl's school, and she wore a different cardigan (with bling) on her first day, to attend something else.

13. Cold and damp and not as comfy as it looks
My description of the reception rooms at Buck'ham Palace. Chilly, and I'd wear a sweater if I could not wear a jacket, like men are allowed to do. This was daytime, for crying out loud!
The days of Haute Oscar are fading. The market for his high end styles is dwindling, as even those who can afford and acess it reject that style as old and tired and tained by over consumption. A new day dawns, and it is wearing a nice sweater if it damn well wants to. Bad news for Oscar.
I think the Queen was impressed and delighted by Michelle as well as by the President. I also think the Queen loved the i-Pod. It was a gift that showed thought and preparation, which are among the few things one can really give to a person who has the world at her beck and call. The best gift is the one she'd not think to ask for or want, because if she already wanted, she'd already have.
And HRH, like many of us, has a history with the last President that would tend to make her glad to see intelligence and grace in office again. GW was on the Royal shit list long before he became president. He was rude to her during Poppy's administration. Rude, crass, and far over the line in terms of personal comments and questions to the Queen. So she did not like him when much of America did not even know he existed.

17. Oscar de la Renta whines about the fashion industry needing help?
He's talking about the high end stuff, accessible to the top 1 or 2 percent?

And, like others, I imagine the middle class begins at $250,000/year or higher.

He can just go away please.

What the "fashion industry" and Americans need are JCrew type lines, made in America at affordable prices.

French Haute Couture is no longer appropriate in these times of economic hardship. Our First Lady is one of the people, and she will wear what is appropriate for her, and Yve St. Laurent's perfume stinks. He should be working on figuring out what is the problem with his old ass passé brand that no one under 65 wants to touch with a 10 ft. pole.

31. Oscar has been hanging around runways a little too long. A sweater IS
appropriate for an afternoon meeting with the Queen of England. The Palace has said that this was an informal meeting, meant to be welcoming and gracious.

Had Michelle worn the funky sweater that she wore to watch the schoolgirls perform, it would not have been appropriate. But a dressy black sweater that matched her skirt was definitely appropriate.

How old is Oscar, anyway? He's acting older than the Queen herself, who seemed quite pleased with Michelle and even broke with tradition to hug her.

He has an opinion and he said it nicely:)

But, this comment was a real "OUCH"..

Martin Arguello April 3rd, 2009 9:45 pm ET

"Michelle Obama, is the wife to the most powerful man in the world. She is also the first black first lady. Furthermore, she's an attorney and a mother of two. The world is looking to her for guidance. Appearances are everything right now. If she wants to pretend that's she humble, well great. However, Mrs. Obama out of anyone should know that there are dress codes for every occasion. She wouldn't show up to court in a mini skirt. Why would she show up in a sweater to the G-20. She needs to start setting an example and needs to start presenting herself as a strong leader, She needs to stop wearing these green outfits and start wearing a business suit, if she wants to be treated with respect. As a public figure and a role model to our world's youth, it is her obligation and responsiblity to represent herself in a proper fashion."
