1. They're with their grandma...
...and, unlike many children seperated from their parents, they can SEE their parents on TV.;)

7. Plus, with cell phones and the internet, they can pretty much talk to them anytime.
When my dad was in the Vietnam War, we had to send either letters by snail mail, or tape recordings by the same route. Communication was infrequent, and very slow.

The girl's are probably enjoying their timeout break from Mom and Dad....Remember how going to grandmothers house was so much fun...

12. This post reeks of 1950s sexism. father's influence on a child is just as important as a mother
women should not be marginalized to be the only important caregivers. Father's love and attention is hugely important.
Women get sidelined in politics for just this thing - people say "But how can she raise her children?"

It is never said to male politicians.

Stop the sexism and fight for gender parity in government.

14. But Captain_Nemo, read Obama's two books....
...he admits that in his long absences Michelle raised the children. It's not sexism, it's just a fact. Would it be great if it was different? Of course.

15. How in heck you got all of that from the OP is just beyond me.
I'm sure that those girls are missing their mama half as much as she is missing them. And that has nothing to do with "sexism" or "gender parity in government."

17. Some people get too deep
I agree that this has nothing to do with sexism. It's just might be the longest Michelle has been away from her children and I'm sure she missed them.

I'm sure the Pres. also misses his children but this post wasn't about him.

21. How many fathers take on this responsibility while the mother directs her attention elsewhere?
In straight couples, how many men have taken the lead in regards to the household duties? Out of those that do, how many have stayed at home while a woman takes primary care of the household costs?

I don't need sexism to see what is before me. What I do need is equal treatment considering the roles women serve in their households and in the work place.

Whatever parity women have in government will not change the roles women choose in their lives. Why not create appreciation for the roles we actually have? There is nothing wrong with doing more in the world, but why undercut how much women already do.

Michelle Obama chose to be a mother. From all appearances, she is doing a great job. I doubt anyone would castigate her professional choices in working for a hospital or health institutions. Why does she or any other woman have to say, take me seriously AND ignore what a great mother I am.

Obama may be the man, but his children grew to look to Michelle Obama as the one who will be there for them. Over the election season, they have also grown to look to their grandmother to be there for them when mommy and daddy have to be away.

You do not think it is possible they took a week of vacation at one point or another without their kids? That they have never been to an overnight camp? That she left them in Chicago for a week at a time when she was campaigning last year?

I am not sure why this is extraordinary?

I'm sure that's posted on FR somewhere, though probably not with the term "African-American".

Michelle Obama Returns Early to Washington

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/04/06/michelle_obama_returns_early_t.html?wprss=44

ANKARA, Turkey -- President Obama's European adventure continues, but his wife has decided to get off the ride.

The first lady flew back to the United States on Sunday night, departing Prague in the afternoon and arriving at Andrews Air Force Base by 7:30 a.m., aides said.

White House officials say Michelle Obama wanted to get back in time to start the kids' school week. They said she felt she had already been away from the two girls for a long time.

Obama had her own hectic schedule in Europe while her husband conducted government business. She visited a school for girls, attended ballet performances, met the Queen of England and toured the old city in Prague.

Her early departure means she is missing the Turkey leg of the trip, which would have taken her to Ankara and Istanbul.

I understand she has full authority of the solarium, the large informal room on the third floor of the White House.
