Hangin' with Mrs. Obama

I might as well just admit that I think it's quite cool that the White House now has a vegetable garden--and beehives!--on the grounds. But what strikes me most about the whole enterprise is that Michelle Obama appears to have adopted a whole class of 5th graders at Bancroft Elementary School in D.C. According to the White House schedule for tomorrow, she's going to host another event in the garden tomorrow with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and the kids who helped her break ground on March 20. The schedule also notes that "students from the school will return later this year for harvesting and cooking with the food grown."

The First Lady did say on "60 Minutes" before moving into the White House that she wanted to "have an impact in the D.C. area." I just didn't know that meant she'd be inviting a bunch of elementary school kids over to the house once a month.

Students from the school, which has had a garden since 2001, will also help plant, harvest and cook the vegetables, berries and herbs. Virtually the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said with a laugh. “Now Grandma, my mom, I don’t know.” Her mother, she said, will probably sit back and say: “Isn’t that lovely. You missed a spot.”

and no doubt the President will do it without complaining ..... and no doubt five minutes later someone will come out and tell him he has a phone call he has to take. :)

3. Michelle should take this to the internet...

Have a kids blog site where different kids and families can share their gardens and community efforts....

We are starting a garden project and the neighbors have shown an interest in participating in the effort too...

Isn't it cool that Michelle & Barack have the personalities to share their jibes and irreverence, the love that thay have in their family... You know she'll have him pulling weeds, President or not...BUT, He will find a way of geting her dirty in the yard, or getting her back some other way around the house...
I love that they are real people, not always "staged" or On guard...

I love that about their family.

I would also love to watch the academic progress of the children that visit the WH.

I bet that all the time they are there -- she is encouraging them about their school work etc.
