Allies of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) are using recent reports that President Obama will address immigration reform this year as an opportunity to raise funds for the Arizona Republican.
Jason LeVecke, co-chair of McCain's re-election finance committee, penned a letter to hundreds of Houston business leaders urging them to attend a fundraiser for McCain as a way to show their support for comprehensive immigration reform, the Houston Chronicle reports.
“Enforcement-only immigration legislation has devastated the economy of my home state Arizona,” LeVecke wrote. As the owner of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, LaVecke added that such laws were "one of the reasons we are planning to open 20 (restaurant) locations in Texas!”
Previously, McCain has led the charge for middle-of-the-road immigration policies, efforts that often put him at odds with his party's base.
Houston businesses rely on immigrant labor and in the past have been supportive of McCain's proposals.
