68. I think I recognize that look...
from when mine was a pup. She used to piddle whenever she met someone, or try to jump up on them. Nothing like anticipating having your dog put a run in someone's stockings, or piddling on their shoes.

Sasha also looks a little hesitant. Bo is bigger than he looked in the original photo. He might be intimidating to such a small girl.

53. Sasha looked a little sulky at the egg roll, too
So I don't think it's the dog. Maybe you're right that she's gettomg tired of living in a fish bowl -- or she might have a cold or just be a little out of sorts. Seven year olds can be very self-absorbed -- it's not the most sociable of ages.

I don't see her interacting much with Bo, at least from the pics. Malia and Barack are having a blast. I think that dog ownership still needs to grow on Michelle and Sasha. I have no doubt that Bo will worm his way into their hearts.

44. There's a lot of professional jealousy towards Milan in the field
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 05:50 PM by hlthe2b
Whle there are several effective approaches, no single approach is necessarily best for all settings and all dogs. The "Positive reenforcement only" crowd dislikes Milan's social dominance theories... Quite frankly, I don't think most of the alternative approaches have ever been demonstrably successful in the toughest cases, Milan specializes in--that of the so-called "Gladiator" dogs...

But, I think the criticism is fueled by professional jealousy more than any justification based on results and data. I like and trust Milan, myself.

58. Milan's best stuff is about the need for exercise and mental activity
He takes the dominance stuff way too far for my tastes (I think he needs to talk to some wolf ecologists about actual canid pack behavior).

64. Only because in many human minds, "dominance = abuse"
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 07:55 PM by hlthe2b
and that is not at all what is being reflected by his techniques or philosophy.

While I agree with the exercise and mental activity portion of his philosophy being stressed, I've heard and read the critique vis-a-vis a misunderstanding of dominance and wolf pack behavior. To those who are hung up on any domestic canine and wolf pack behavior differences, I think it is too fine a point and they are over-interpreting what he is trying to do in terms of natural behavior. IMO--and I've worked with dogs in a professional context for 30 years.

But, I also agree there are other techniques which may work as well or better depending on the breed, the temperament, and the setting--including the personalities of the owners.

I'm a total pushover. And my dog can pull your arm out of its socket on a leash, unless you're very, very diligent and consistent. Just one day when you're tired or distracted and he will walk you to death.

25. Michelle needs to learn to lean back instead of forward when walking Bo
If she leans forward like that, she is going to do a faceplant at some point. Just a sign that she is not used to walking dogs, she'll learn. I am the voice of experience about that, I foster labs who can be quite unruly on the leash. If you lean forward, you don't have control.

I'm not sure who is happier, Barack or Malia. Sasha may be feeling a little left out because Bo is probably too much for her to control at this point.

55. It sure is pretty in
Springtime, Washington D.C. The Obamas and Bo are clearly enjoying getting to know each other..it seems they found the perfect dog to love.

63. Gorgeous...
Thanks Jackeens, It's like it didn't happen unless you post the pics!

My fave is #26, the family walking under the blooming tree...

I can imagine sasha is not able to manage the dog yet, my little girl loves dogs but doesn't realize how fast they grow or how easily they will knock you down with their playfulness!

obviously more love in the WH than has been there in a LONG time!

I love our First Family!!!!!

67. They need to get a doggie harness
Instead of using the dog collar for the leash. That way when Bo takes off running, the collar won't put pressure on his neck.

My little Jack Russell likes to take off and try to run while on the leash..and kinda forgets (or doesn't seem to care) that the "woof woof, cough, cough, woof, woof, cough, cough) is because she will NOT stop pulling at the leash and it, in turn, pulls on the dog collar.
Plus the harness can't slip off as easily.

Just my 2 cents as a dog owner.

71. Bo looks like he likes his new lawn
I think he's smiling in a few of those pics. Malia is just loving this dog. Sasha I think might need a little time to warm up to him. What a sweet family event.

If that dog doesn't know it's the luckiest dog in the world, well he sure doesn't show it.

78. Question ~ Are you the WH photographer ? The photos
are usually ones that I have never seen anywhere else.

How do you take/get such amazing photographs?

Fan Club Member and Cheerleader,

79. Hello Ms. goclark!
:-) Luckily I'm not the WH photographer, if I was all you'd get would be photos of thumbs covering lenses, etc

They're nearly all from www.daylife.com - have a look at the site, it's brilliant, it collects photos each day from Getty, Reuters, etc. It has a great search function too, so you'll usually find what you're looking for.

The Time Magazine site has beautiful photos too, worth a look.

Say hello to Mr goclark for me!

:hi:

85. I think Sasha needs a dog of her own choosing - maybe a rescue or shelter rehome this time
I know she could find a labradoodle, or a poodle, I think both are hypo allergenic.

She looks to me like I'd look if my big sister got a dog, and I didn't. Might just be that her Dad and Malia's energy is such a match for Bo's that she gets left behind on this. Maybe they could find a personality/energy match that would be closer to her needs?

I just feel bad seeing her in those pictures - Malia is glowing while Sasha reminds me of a kid still looking under the Christmas tree for her big present, and not at all sure she has found it yet back there:)
