Jonathan Turley - An Overrated, Overquoted One Trick Pro-Impeachment Pony?
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 02:04 PM by Median Democrat
Is there any President over the past three administrations that Jonathan Turley has not claimed was engaging in illegal acts, and that he did not want to impeach? Turley testified in favor of the impeachment of Bill Clinton, which I think completely destroy his credibility.

I do think that the impeachment of Bush would have been completely justified, but now we have Turley getting an amazing amount of air time to essentially argue that President Obama is breaking the law.

My question is why shouldn't I dismiss Jonathan Turley as a kook, particularly after he testified in favor of the impeachment of Bill Clinton?

Has Jonathan Turley won any trials or significant cases? Has he written any influential books? Has he ever served as an appellate court judge and authored any notable opinions?

My point is what makes Professor Turley anything more than a media whore and a one trick pony who is willing to argue that the President is breaking the law, and can be impeached for not doing X?

2. My thoughts, exactly...
I'm getting really pissed at these predictable patterns of attack any time someone says one thing that isn't totally in tuned with some DUers beliefs...

24. Took A Look - See Below - Not Exactly Laurence Tribe
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 02:28 PM by Median Democrat
This is why I posted the question. I looked at his background, and he looks like a media whore, rather than a serious constitutional scholar. For example, where are his books, yet he says he is a nationally recognized constitutional scholar? Based on what exactly?

Doesn't a "scholar" have to do a little more than write opinion pieces? Where's the serious legal work?

32. Go to a law search engine or law library....
You would have to be an idiot to rely on Google for peer reviewed medical journal searches or similarly, legal searches-- that is if you REALLY care to find out for sure.

34. Let Me Guess - Turley is modest, which is why he doesn't list them?
I also checked Amazon, but maybe he does not sell his books. He just gives them away for free? Help a fellow DUer out. You seem to think he has written some books. Enlighten us.

Now, based on the above, do you think he is a nationally recognized scholar on constitutional law?

5. Jonathan Turley - Testifying In Favor Of Bill Clinton's Impeachment. Agree?
I have never commented on Turley, because he has always struck me as a bit of a loon. I am asking what exactly makes him such an expert? Did he win a nobel prize or authored textbooks like Paul Krugman?

Here is his testimony on Bill Clinton regarding why Bill Clinton committed "high crimes". You be the judge.

I am just saying that we should be careful about accepting Turley's statements as the gospel truth. Turley gets air time because he say outrageous shit.

15. There is absolutely no truth to your last statement.
Of the polls conducted on the topic, the outcomes basically wind up matching the biases of the polling firm - meaning there's really no conclusive evidence on what the people really want.

The absolute truth of the matter is that as long as the economy improves, Obama could almost literally eat a live baby and win re-election. And everyone, including Obama himself, knows it.

Career

Some of Turley’s most notable non-academic work is his representation of the Area 51 workers at a secret air base in Nevada; the nuclear couriers at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; the Rocky Flats grand jury in Colorado; Dr. Eric Foretich, the husband in the famous Elizabeth Morgan custody controversy.<3> He challenged Black Bag Operations authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in espionage cases against former CIA officer Harold Nicholson; and four former United States Attorneys General during the Clinton impeachment litigation. He has also represented defendants in terrorism cases including Dr. Ali Al-Timimi (the alleged head of the Virginia Jihad/Paintball conspiracy) and Dr. Sami Al-Arian (in a criminal contempt case)<4>. He also represented Larry Hanauer, a House Intelligence Committee staff member falsely accused of leaking classified information to the New York Times and David Faulk, a whistleblower who revealed abuses at NSA's Fort Gordon surveillance programs. He is also lead counsel in the litigation over the mass arrests at the World Bank/IMF protests in Washington. He testified on the Clinton impeachment as one of the constitutional experts on the standards and merits of the case. The conceptual thread running through many of the cases taken on by Turley is that they involve claims of Executive Privilege and national security exceptions to fundamental constitutional rights.

He is a frequent witness before the House and Senate on constitutional and statutory issues as well as tort reform legislation. He lives in D.C. with his wife Leslie. He served as the consultant to the Florida House of Representatives on constitutional issues and also served as the consultant to the Puerto Rico House of Representatives on the impeachment of Gov. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá. Professor Turley is also a nationally recognized legal commentator. Turley was ranked as 38th in the top 100 most cited “public intellectuals” in the recent study by Judge Richard Posner. Turley was found to be the second most cited law professor in the country. He was also ranked among the nation's top 500 lawyers in 2008. (He was previously ranked in the top ten military lawyers as well as one of the forty top lawyers under the age of forty).

His articles on legal and policy issues appear regularly in national publications with over 500 articles in such newspapers as the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal. He is on the Board of Contributors of USA Today. In 2005, Turley was given the Columnist of the Year award for Single-Issue Advocacy for his columns on civil liberties by the Aspen Institute and the Week Magazine. Professor Turley also appears regularly as a legal expert on all of the major television networks. Since the 1990s, he has worked under contract as the on-air Legal Analyst for NBC News and CBS News to cover stories that ranged from the Clinton impeachment to the presidential elections. Professor Turley is often a guest on Sunday talk shows with over two-dozen appearances on Meet the Press, ABC This Week, Face the Nation, and Fox Sunday.

Prior to joining the George Washington University, he was one of the youngest professors to be offered tenure at Tulane University Law School. Turley teaches torts, criminal procedure and environmental law and runs the Project for Older Prisoners (POPS), the Environmental Law Clinic and the Environmental Legislation Project.<5> In the classroom, he is known for his self-deprecating humor, playing practical jokes on his students, and for his engaging teaching style in which he uses entertaining stories drawn from his real-world experiences.

Turley received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. In 2008, he was also awarded a Doctorate of Law (Hon.) from John Marshall Law School in recognition of his career as an advocate of civil liberties and constitutional rights.

Turley, in his capacity as a constitutional scholar, testified in favor of the Clinton impeachment.<6> In October 2006, in an interview by Keith Olbermann of MSNBC, he expressed strong disapproval of the Military Commissions Act of 2006.<7> In numerous appearances on Countdown and The Rachel Maddow Show, he has called for criminal prosecution of Bush administration officials for alleged war crimes, namely torture.

Jonathan Turley was a House page from 1977 to 1978. His blog is found at www.jonathanturley.org, which was recently ranked as the top law professor blog and legal theory blog in the American Bar Association Journal's survey of the top 100 blogs.

Turley's bio does not have anything specific. I read that bio, and where's the back-up? He says he is involed in some high profile cases. Okay, where is the trial victory or the published decision?

49. Here's my question, you could have posted the link at the outset...
But you chose to attack my integrity, rather than respond to my question. It was pretty obvious that I had looked at his website, and his books. You cite an article list, and I have you credit for that below. Now, tell me, who is the one who is engaging in ad hominem attacks.

I do question whether he is as nationally respected as he says he is, because so much of his portfolio relies on media apperances, and he has not written any books, or have many if any published cases.

The best thing I see is his law review articles. Again, I am happy to discuss them, but if you want to attack my character, then just let me know, so I can place you on ignore.

14. Turley has a point, and he
isn't saying anything different from what most people who want war crimes prosecuted are saying.

There is no debate about whether or not Bush officials should be prosecuted, most people agree.

As for claiming that Obama is breaking the law, Glen Greenwald offers some perspective.

People really should focus on ensuring that Bush officials are prosecuted. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't see this as justice served.

He testified on the merits of the Clinton impeachment, not because he was in favor of it. You do understand the difference between the merits of a case and being in favor of it don't you?

merits, the inherent rights and wrongs of a matter, as a lawsuit, unobscured by procedural details, technicalities, personal feelings, etc.: The case will be decided on its merits alone.

in favor of, a. on the side of; in support of: to be in favor of reduced taxation.
b. to the advantage of.

20. A Lot Of Fluff - Where's The Concrete Accomplishments? He's No Laurence Tribe
There is a lot of in favor of this or that. So what?

Where are:

1. Books.
2. Awards.
3. Trials won.
4. Appellate cases argued.
5. Published cases.

For example, take a look at Laurence Tribe. He is a professor of Harvard Law School who has written numerous influential books on Constitutional Law. He has also argued before the United States Supreme Court AND his students have often gone on to clerk for members of the Supreme Court.

Google Laurence Tribe, and look at his CV. This is what I am talking about.

19. Even though it arose out of a stupid-assed lawsuit, Clinton did
commit a crime for which he was disbarred. I don't think, personally, that it constituted a high crime or high misdemeanor worthy of impeachment, but Turley obviously believed that it was.

Turley was right about Bush.

Turley has not YET called for Obama's impeachment. IMO, if Obama doesn't prosecute those who committed war crimes by authorizing torture, he will have broken his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the US, which states that ALL treaties are considered part of the the "supreme law of the land."

The Convention Against Torture, is a treaty to which the US is a signatory party. The Bush Administration tortured, and authorized torture. NOT to prosecute that crime is a crime against the Constitution itself. President Obama should either make sure the crimes are prosecuted, or, if he feels so strongly about not prosecuting, should immediately issue presidential pardons to all involved. Those are the only Constititutional options he has. To refuse to prosecute is breaking the law.

50. Really, I Actually Do Enjoy Reading Krugman's Work. What's Wrong With Krugman?
I know that he pushed the envelope, but he does have a solid academic background, as well as a practical background. The nobel prize does not hurt either.
