Rice delivered OK to waterboard as Bush's adviser
By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer Pamela Hess, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice verbally OK'd the CIA's request to subject alleged al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah to waterboarding in July 2002, a decision memorialized a few days later in a secret memo that the Obama administration declassified last week.

Rice's role was detailed in a narrative released Wednesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee. It provides the most detailed timeline yet for how the CIA's harsh interrogation program was conceived and approved at the highest levels in the Bush White House.

The new timeline shows that Rice played a greater role than she admitted last fall in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The narrative also shows that dissenting legal views about the severe interrogation methods were brushed aside repeatedly.

But even the new timeline has yet to resolve the central question of who inside the Bush administration first broached the idea of using waterboarding and other brutal tactics against terror detainees in the months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

The Intelligence Committee's timeline comes a day after the Senate Armed Services Committee released an exhaustive report detailing direct links between the CIA's harsh interrogation program and abuses of prisoners at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in Afghanistan and at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison.

Both revelations follow President Barack Obama's release of internal Bush administration legal memos that justified the use of severe methods by the CIA, a move that kicked up a firestorm from opposing sides of the ideological spectrum.

According to the new narrative, which compiles legal advice provided by the Bush administration to the CIA, Rice personally conveyed the administration's approval for waterboarding of Zubaydah, a so-called high-value detainee, to then-CIA Director George Tenet in July 2002.

2. Is that perjury... or Contempt of Congress?
I don't think it's perjury.

6. Contempt if she had obstructed or refused to testify.

Perjury perhaps since she testified but may have lied in the process.

3. It is simply shocking, isn't it, ladies and gentlemen, to learn that Condoleezza
Rice may have been less than truthful?

Surely this is a distortion of the liberal media -- those fire-belching socialists at the Associated Press.

4. I would be very, very interested to see how the Bush admin responded...
...to dissenting legal opinions. If they exist in memo form, THEY would be very interesting.

5. Strongly agree. I'm hoping there are just such memoranda and that
some key people will deliver them to the attention of the voters.

I'm the guy standing in line right behind you to see those memos.

7. She's never adequately responded to questions about the July 7, 2001 meeting with Tenent and Black
that they said was a 10 on a scale of 10 in trying to alert her to Al Quaida threats. She said she didn't recall the meeting and this meeting did not make it into the 9/11 Commission - they said they were unaware of it.

8. She stands amid the smoldering ruins of her grand ambitions.
Condi, you should have become a music professor at a college somewhere. That would have been triumph enough.

But no. You had to hobnob with the Bush family. You got an early taste of power and were encouraged to stick around.

And for awhile, it paid dividends. Then came the airplanes and the skyscrapers and the whole 9 yards that followed, and yet even when part of you said, "Jesus, I need to get away from these people before the whole shithouse goes up in smoke," you didn't do it. You were hooked on the power and the celebrity.

Torture? Did someone mention torture? Must be the liberal media. Must be the far-left bloggers. Must be the ACLU. Place a call or two to Alberto and hear his reassurances. Do a shoe run to Georgetown and then it's back to the lying.

So what now, piano girl? Are you going to gamble that this doesn't go any farther, or will you finally get the scent that's blowin' in the wind and choose self-exile? Pack up two or three hundred of your favorite shoes and high-tail it out of the country. Conyers says he's coming after you. Today's headlines lend credence to his claim.

You abandoned Brahms. You cozied up to Bush. Bad choice, darlin'.

10. I[m sorry...this should be flaming right now...in the past too many people
here have given Condo-liar a pass, saying she's trying to work within a really difficult situation. BS...she's as dirty as the rest and her hands are even bloodier.
