Insects aren't torture....
Okay...

This is one of the memes on Faux, I've seen guest star fools on MSNBC spout this nonsense, and on CNN.

Check out this video: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x301311

The video is the one with Shep Smith from Faux news where his guest says a "caterpillar" is NOT torture.

Then this one: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x302075#302077
Major Garrett says he's deathly terrified of Bees, another one says he's allergic to bees.

Now...If a man is deathly terrified of insects or animals or anything and put in a confined space where he can't run away from them....to say that's not torture is disturbing. This disgusts me. I'd like these clowns to spend 2 minutes in a confined space with a bee..I wonder if they'd be laughing then or even taking this situation so lightly.

How is that NOT torture...I don't know.

1. The box alone is torture imo - but anything that the person is freaked out by...
...could work as torture ~ insects, snakes, whatever.

4. Room 101
In Orwell's "1984", putting Winston Smith in a device that caged his head along with a live rat was what broke him.

Fear of that magnitude coupled with confinement qualifies as "severe psychological stress", so yes, it is torture. Orwell thought it was torture (after all, rm 101 was the dreaded place no one wanted to go), and so do I.

I love how the FAUX people are calling it a caterpillar.....do they have ANY evidence that is what was used? Otherwise, they are trying to frame the argument once again, and we should not let them.

I had nightmares for years because of that damn book. Like thinking about it makes me cry...shit..now my hands are shaking.

8. I rest my case; it's torture
I honestly do not see where these assholes get off on trying to frame it as flowers and rainbows; it's goddamned despicable and makes me ashamed they are my countrymen.

17. Me too
I wondered what kind of tortured logic would be necessary to suggest that O'Brien wasn't torturing Winston, but only trying to love him. There it is.

I happen to be completely freaked out by insects. That's why I always have an offspring, SO, or friend nearby to dispatch them for me.

13. How about Fire Ants? Scorpions? Spiders? Millipedes? Certain Caterpillars?
Edited on Thu Apr-23-09 05:24 PM by lunatica
And how about allergies to bee stings?

Someone should smack these people around and then put them in a box with a swarm of pissed off bees.

examples:

http://home.earthlink.net/~roypoodle/tools/Safety%20Reports/stinginginsects/insects.htm

Venomous insects and other arthropods produce venoms that can be classified as:

1. Venoms that produce blisters (vesicating toxins) (e.g., blister beetles, certain stinging caterpillars, millipedes).

2. Venoms that attack the central nervous system (neurotoxins) (e.g., black and brown widow spiders, bark scorpions, certain ticks, Hymenoptera, wheel bugs).

3. Venoms that destroy tissue (cytolytic and haemolytic) (e.g., Hymenoptera, fire ants, ground scorpions, mites, chiggers, wheel bugs, brown recluse spider).

4. Toxins that prevent blood from clotting (haemorrhagic) (e.g., lice, fleas, ticks, mites, true bugs, biting flies).

27. You have no problem with psychological torture? Have you read anything about it.
Read.

http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/64/3/277

http://physiciansforhumanrights.org/library/documents/reports/break-them-down-the.pdf

If you don't want to read actual documents and prefer short summaries, try these:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11313

http://psychoanalystsopposewar.org/blog/2007/03/05/psychological-torture-is-torture-new-study-finds/

There are only two types of people who "have no problem" with psychological torture: those who don't really know anything about it, and sociopaths.

22. I'm deathly afraid of the Stinging Nettle Caterpillar
As are about 100% of the people on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I'm also afraid of the Little Fire Ant, which is so small, you almost need a loupe to see them, but they sting like a full size fire ant.

I'm afraid to think that all of these little invaders was brought to Hawaii, the most remote Archipelago on the planet, and now is subject to the same hoors that afflict other areas of the world.

I think that John Hurt was afraid of Rats in the Movie 1984, and if you haven't seen that seen, it is the most terrifying filmed version of torture I have ever seen. It's truly nighmarish. I think Richard Burton is at his best as a psychopath in that movie.

25. No..no I won't watch it. Because my biggest fear is rats. I mean it's my ultimate nightmare.
I jump in the shadows and start screaming if people people mention the name. Thinking about one gives me the shakes, I break out in tears as I'm about to do, I am currently focusing on other things in order to not imagine them or I will NOT sleep. I cannot see them. I have problems with rodents in general but rats in particular. The book gave me nightmares...I won't go into the film which I will NEVER see.

29. If it were a centipede, I'd be freaking the hell out.
Caterpillars don't scare me, but it really depends on the individual phobia.

I can't believe how many people are willing to argue down these standards. Arguing for torture is--well, it's just evil. These people are happily arguing for torture. History will remember them as monsters.

Didn't they do that at the end of that book? Stuck the guy's head in a box and threatend to put rats in because he was petrified of rats? Or something. It's been years since I read it but I seem to remember the Ministry of Peace, or whatever it was called, doing something similar.
