When does a mother working two jobs to feed her kids get as much press as the Craig's List Killer?

I've always held that the media is neither conservative or Liberal. It's corporate and looks to protect the interest of the ruling class. The Craig's List Killer gets so press becuase the media sensationalises the fuck out of it.

Same with the Tea Bag Parties which is an event entirely created by the media.

I know that a lot of folks feel that Maddow, Olberman etc "Speak for me". I think they are good at what they do but work from a very limited pallet. When does someone like Barbara Ehrenrich or Naomi Klein get their own show on MSNBC? At the end of the day, there really isn't anyone to counter the hard right materialism of Lou Dobbs who just pretends to speak for working folk while doing the dirty work for the ruling class.

Your statement alone leads me to believe you know nothing about their plight.

Women, as a demographic, make 75 cents on the dollar to their male counterparts for doing the same jobs. What these people have to do to survive much less raise kids on these shitty salaries is fucking phenomenal. Working in health care I interview these people on a daily basis.

Just because something doesn't make the news doesn't mean it's not New Worthy. The plight of the poor and the working classes is news worthy. The purpose of the news is to keep you informed of the world you live in. Afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

6. i don't really watch much teevee

My wife likes those News Shows. I just get what's going on in the background.

I only watch TeeVee for sports. Mainly hockey which is about 3-4 nights a week.

I find most of whats on TeeVee complete junk. Especially what passes for news these days.

I still get a kick out of Family Guy. I missed KING OF THE HILL the first go-round, so now I enjoy the reruns late at night. That AMERICAN DAD is a howl, too--the guy is such a Republican! And the "Paul Lynde" alien is so retro!

I can't stand listening to the babbling opinionators anymore. Half the time they've got their heads up their own asses, and their "facts" all wrong. I'd rather watch JEOPARDY or something!

15. It's a sports city, make no mistake. But we did spend many, many years in the wilderness.

The Celtics drought was remarkable in its length. And the baseball drought--well, that became a business all in itself...sorta like the Cubs (the National League team that I earns my affection, wonder why?).

14. Bingo! People look to the media to forget the boredom and powerlessness of their lives.

During the Great depression, the most popular movies were musicals and comedies.

Nowadays, science fiction horror, violence, sex, and inane, mean-spirited comedy dominate the media. This kind of escapist content fits the reality of our times.

Everyday, new revelations are greeting a public that kept its collective heads in the sand. Thievery on a grand scale, lies, unnecessary wars, a collapsing health care system, offshoring of jobs on a massive scale, stolen elections, spying on the public, torture, more thievery described as bailouts, huge bonuses for incompetents and crooks, more lies, and on and on.

While many of us on DU and other forums were aware of what was happening, the masses chose to avoid reality. Now reality is lashing out at them, and they are desperately seeking escape, and the media is providing it to them in increasingly stronger dosages.

12. I don't think it's quite that conscious

the media is corporate, except for PBS. Thus it does not "look to protect the interests of the ruling class" as much as it looks to pad its own bottom line. Back when I had a bookstore somebody shared a cartoon with me that summarized it nicely. The cartoon said "the eternal battle" and there was a sign that said "going out of business - beauty, literature and theater" next to that was a sign that said "coming soon - crap that sells - ugliness, fluff, and cinema".

Crap sells. Violence sells. Sex sells. And sales are like a self-perpetuating law of natural selection. What sells, survives, and continues to sell. Unless there is some kind of regulation, some established social rules or laws, there develops a race to the bottom. Not sure why that is any more than I know why bacon, salt and high fructose corn syrup taste better than brussels sprouts.

Tragedy = Great entertainment, will keep viewers watching

Happy stories = generally boring, only good as 'filler' between the tragedy stories so it's not all tragedy news, ignore most of these happy stories or the viewers will get bored

Much as you might think it's a tragedy for a mother to work 2 jobs to feed her kids, it's not to the media. To the media tragedy is someone dying or getting seriously injured, or something outrageous happening like people getting scammed.
