If McCain had won...
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 11:30 PM by Drunken Irishman
I think in reality, we'd be fucked. Not fucked fucked (that'd come later), but fucked and on the path to fucked fucked.

Seriously, McCain has been in opposition of everything Pres. Obama has proposed since taking office.

Had McCain won, this is what I think would have happened.

Firstly, he would bring on a spending freeze, except for the war. There would have been no stimulus and economic recovery plan. McCain would concede the economy was hurting, but try to rosey it up by suggesting it wasn't nearly as bad as it appeared. He then would slash taxes, do away with spending, ignore Wall Street and the banks, while continuing with keeping troops in Iraq, while not even taking a glance at Afghanistan.

Remember when the stock market began to really slide when Pres. Obama took office? Well it would have done the exact same thing, except with no type of banking and Wall Street plan, confidence in the market would have continued to tank under Pres. McCain. So while the markets stabilized under Pres. Obama, they most likely would have continued a sharp decline.

That would lead to even more widespread economic panic.

At the G20, McCain would have been greeted by protests and his attitude would be extremely standoffish toward other leaders. This would ultimately hurt at getting any money to help aide the world economy and he would have left Europe essentially accomplishing nothing.

By mid-March, with the stock market performing at its worst since the early 80s, McCain's approval ratings would begin to crumble as more and more Americans begin to question his leadership.

At that point, the Democrats would have drafted their own economy recovery package, however, McCain would vow to veto anything that spends, suggesting to the American people that spending got us into this mess and less spending and lower taxes would get us out of it.

As the world economy continued to regress, many economists would suggest the United States was about to enter a hard depression. That would causes even more panic and ultimately, the people would take to the streets demanding government action.

That is where we would be with McCain as president. You think it was bad with Bush, well McCain would have sat and watched everything collapse because he established a spending freeze and ultimately would have let everything bottom out. Believing less taxes and less lower spending would turn everything around.

3. They're good at that.
Notice how Hoover never gets any of the blame from the Republicans? It's like Roosevelt walked in, the stock market crashed and we entered the Great Depression.

Except the stock market crashed in the 20s, before Roosevelt even began running for president and the Depression began in most places that year.

Fucking idiots! :eyes:

2. I think that regardless of how you feel after micromanaging opinion on every little thing Obama does
one HAS to believe that we are indeed SO much better off with Obama in the driver's seat. No matter how critical of Obama, how disappointed in point A or point B on something, with McCain...yeah, we'd be soooooo fucked.

6. We'd be effed in so many ways after the fab state funeral was over and President Palin seized power
Whatever order that would occur in.

You should have heard dh when he saw Palin with McCain (he used to like McCain, once upon a time). "John, John, John, you poor fool -- you need to get a food taster."

7. Yup........
It would have been a total nightmare, but in all honesty McCain didn't have a chance. The election was over the moment it started, once Obama got the nomination I knew he would be our next president.

I agree with you on how McCain would have handled things but I'd like to add a few of my own. Obama has done several town hall meetings since the election, if McCain had won he would not have even given that a thought. The tax cuts you mentioned is something he would defiantly do (like all republicans) but they would go towards the rich and mega corporations, as usual during most republican regimes. The ban on stem cells would still be on, no stimulus (as you mentioned) and he probably would have gone to war with Iran by now.
