100 days: the test of a leader or a journalistic 'Hallmark holiday'?

By Peter Nicholas and Christi Parsons
April 28, 2009

On Wednesday, President Obama’s 100th day in office, he will take part in a town-hall-style event in St. Louis and a prime-time news conference from the East Room of the White House.

Reporting from Washington -- As President Obama prepares to mark his 100th day in the White House, he acknowledged Monday that the nation might not reach one of his major environmental goals for a while longer:

That's how long it could take for the nation to cut its carbon emissions by 80%, Obama said during an appearance at the National Academy of Sciences.

His caution plays into the administration's efforts to deflate expectations about what he reasonably could have solved by Wednesday.

The White House initially downplayed the 100-day benchmark -- one of his senior advisors, David Axelrod, called it the "journalistic equivalent of a Hallmark holiday."

But now, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says, the administration is "playing along."

On Wednesday, Obama will take part in a town-hall-style event in St. Louis and a prime-time news conference from the East Room of the White House. Every major broadcast network but Fox will air the news conference live.

The president is certain to get a question on what he's accomplished in his first 100 days -- and he's certain to have a ready answer. But Obama also wants to discourage the idea that progress will be quick.

"It's an arbitrary demarcation of time created by some conglomeration of reporters and historians," Dan Pfeiffer, Obama's deputy communications director, said Monday. "Any suggestion we could do more than make a down payment on the change the president promised in 100 days is unrealistic."

Obama is grappling with issues that don't easily comport with a 100-day timeline, as the last couple of weeks have demonstrated.

11. I think it's Cosmically kinda
Cool..'cause even though the "fox" isn't the faux n00ze channel, it's still fox and they'd rather show their big ratings hopeful, "Lie To Me", and be sure "American Idol" doesn't get cut into than in engage in what's going on in the country with our new energetic president.

It's more than apparent that particular corporation does not give a rat's ass for the future of our country.

12. How true.
I never watch the channel but it's obvious they could care less about giving Pres. Obama a platform after their teabagging campaign was a big flop.
I hope Pres. Obama doesn't pick on their reporter ever.

15. I love it that the people who don't want to watch Obama
are going to turn to something called "Lie To Me"!

"You can't handle the truth!"

8. Love the way he handles the Office and the 100 days
As a former teacher for the Gifted, I am completely delighted to play detective when he makes a decision.

I try to figure out what makes his brain decide to do what others say "He shouldn't have done that because..."

He is not perfect because events and politics come into play but he is extremely GIFTED. He thinks way outside the box in so many situations.

It is so thrilling to see the "MSM" have to admit time and time again -- " He was right!"

He is a superb TEACHER.

Bravo for 100 days Mr. President!

10. This is what it is and we are fortunate that
our President believes in a strong foundation!

"Supporting the White House effort, the Democratic National Committee announced Monday it was airing a 60-second cable TV spot today and Wednesday. Viewers will see text reading: "The First 100 Days. Laying a Foundation for Change."

Actually, george bush was a failure in the first hundred days and nothing changed.. "George W. Bush's presidency really began with 9/11, for example, and that of course wasn't evident in his first 100 days," Greenstein said."

16. Good read, thanks Sister.
I have to say he is so far the smartest and hardest working President I've seen in my lifetime.
