1. I like her better than I do Susan Collins ...
Wasn't it Snowe who got really upset over the lack of
warrants in the FISA case?

2. Bring 'em both in.
When Democrats were switching sides we went into a 20 year tailspin. I'm liking the momentum here.

3. She stated that being a Republican is part of her "ethnic identity". Not sure what she meant by
"ETHNIC". So, it doesn't look like she's leaving the Repukes any time soon.

Maybe there's more hope convincing Susan. However, my gut tells me that they both are simply too psychologically wedded to the Republican Party. There's something about the party label that they have attached themselves to because they certainly are more moderate.

4. she is of Greek descent
"Snowe was born Olympia Jean Bouchles in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Georgia Goranites and George John Bouchles. Her father immigrated to the United States from Sparta, Greece.<4> She is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.<5><6>"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympia_Snowe

Not sure what that has to do with being a Republican.

6. That's what I was trying to figure out too...
Here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/0..._n_192368.html

<snip>

So far, she said, she's staying put. "I believe in the traditional tenets of the Republican Party: strong national defense, fiscal responsibility, individual opportunity. I haven't abandoned those principles that have been the essence of the Republican Party. I think the Republican Party has abandoned those principles.

She added that being a Republican is simply part of who she is. "It's my ethnic heritage, Spartan side, that continues to fight," she said.

8. I don't think the "ethnic heritage" part had to do with being a Republican.
I read that to mean something like, "Just as my Spartan forebears were tough fighters, I too am a fighter. Rather than giving up on my party, I'm going to fight for its soul."

12. Considering she's probably the only "moderate" Repuke left, probably so.
I don't even consider Collins a real moderate, since she was leading the Repukes on the "gutting the Stimulus Plan" thing. More like a pro-choice corporatist. But then that description fits half the DLC, doesn't it?

11. I welcome everyone who is willing to stand with us, and support
most of our proposals, (we are not a lockstep party, no one supports 100% of anything of what any one part of the party puts forward.).. hopefully we will NOT do what the republicans did, and demand ivory tower purity.. so if Olympia Snowe became a democrat.. welcome aboard.

15. Absolutely. Just think what might happen if she actually hung around
with democrats. She is already a moderate and that's with hanging around repukes.

20. 74-26%
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 07:59 PM by Davis_X_Machina
Second largest margin in a contested Senate election that year. Only Lugar did better. Alan Keyes did slightly better against Obama than Jean Hay Bright did against Snowe.

22. Won't happen. She dies an R.
She's going nowhere. Her husband is the last GOP governor of Maine. The state GOP basically runs out of her office. And her value as the moderate in the shop window grows every time the party lurches further to the left.

If she was thrown out, she'd leave. But she'll never leave on her own. And if they threw her out, it would destroy the state GOP for a generation.

I'll take all the action you want to give me at 30-1 against her doing a Jeffords, 100-1 against her becoming a D, ever.
